Oooh, I really like your design! I went ahead and replicated this using FreeCAD. I've attached the CAD file and some screenshots. @sandungas hopefully it'll save you some time.
You just gave me an idea for a special jig for using with that molybdenum wire you're talking about. I'm thinking some kind of jig to hold an RSX with a screw knob that the wire mounts to. Pop the chip into the jig, screw down a second half of the jig to hold the chip firmly in place and then...
Damn... I de-lidded all of mine whilst off board and I've had two chips throwing 10 x 2120 and a single 3013. I've been using razors to do it. I was extremely careful too. I wonder if the interposer flexes too much during de-lid when it isn't being held flat by solder balls on the underside? We...
For posterity I'll add a small update on that. I replaced the first RSX with a different one. The first chip was slightly bent in one corner and nearly touching the board. I replaced it twice more with two separate RSX chips, both exhibiting the same problem as each other but different to the...
Nope.
You haven't recovered the console. You've botched the electrical connections on the bottom of the CPU by using pressure exceeding the design to force the failing BGA joints to establish a connection.
No I would not. I suggest contacting a reputable repair technician local to you and...
It's not the board so much as the interposer, solder balls and BGA pads on both the interposer and board you need to worry about. Those copper BGA pads are fractions of a millimeter thick. Applying extreme downward pressure isn't great for them and it definitely can warp the board even though...
Just a small note so that people are aware. Placing extreme pressure on a BGA chip like the cell is a recipe for long term disaster. Using pressure to re-establish contact between the bottom of the Cell substrate, failing solder balls and the BGA pads of the board is putting the Cell BGA package...
Problem Solved!
So... Vyktor suggested I check eepcsum on the syscon.
SHE LIVES!
tldr; When I switched the syscon to internal mode I forgot to update the eepcsum which caused the boot failure. It looked related to power but lo and behold... It wasn't.
Backstory
A few months ago I was gifted a bunch of PlayStation 3's by a really pleasant local chap who wanted rid of them. They're all faulty CECHC03 models so I want to get as many of them up and running as I can. This has taken me down the rabbit hole of PSX-Place and tons of wonderful posts...
