PS3 Fault finding YLOD with the SYSCON - First steps and Error reporting

I need to track down a short on the 12V line from the PSU. What do I need to look for and what’s the best way of going about this? Am I right in thinking black probe on ground then touching each side of a capacitor/resistor to see if both sides beep, indicating a short, or am I wrong? Also...

PS3 Fault finding YLOD with the SYSCON - First steps and Error reporting

Decided to give the one I got working then stopped showing the standby led another go after watching @RIP-Felix 2 parter again. I managed to test a number of components, still have some more to test. Here’s my findings. If anyone can be bothered to read through, I’d appreciate hearing your...

PS3 Fault finding YLOD with the SYSCON - First steps and Error reporting

I had a COK-002 board and replaced F6001 and C6019 + C6020 which did get it working for a week. If those are present on that board is suggesting checking them. Also IC5001 and the 3.3v_mk_bds are worth checking. Not sure if you have a schematic. I’m not sure on boards other than COK-001 and 002.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll check those. I did find a significant number of missing capacitors and resistors which I think is more likely the issue. I’ll have a look through your post when I get home to see if I can help.

PS3 Fault finding YLOD with the SYSCON - First steps and Error reporting

I hooked it back up to Syscon but couldn’t get into it to get the error codes. I’ll leave it for now as I’ve turned my attention to another one I have. Managed to get the error codes if this second one. The last few are 3001 and before that, a mix of 1001 and 1004. I know 3001 is to do with 12V...

PS3 Fault finding YLOD with the SYSCON - First steps and Error reporting

Ah I see, that’s my inexperience with electronics at this level. I’ve done as you suggested and it is getting 5V but for some reason there’s no LED and the capacitive buttons don’t work. I reseated the cable and have tried another one as well. It only seems to be 5V on the outermost pin, the one...

If you do have a spare monitor/TV that would be worth trying. I would also try another HDMI cable if you have one. Does the Dell work when other devices are plugged into the HDMI port?

I had forgotten you could do that with Syscon. I’m going to go round and check every capacitor and fuse that I haven’t already checked. If I can’t find anything then, I’ll solder the wires and go back into syscon to see if that can help again. I removed the cable and put one of the multimeter...

PS3 Fault finding YLOD with the SYSCON - First steps and Error reporting

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve removed the ribbon cable and used my multimeter between the board and socket. In the furthest left pin (closest to the PSU), I get 5V counting down quite quickly. The pin next to that is 0.5V counting down. If I do the second most left pin on the small board, and...

PS3 Fault finding YLOD with the SYSCON - First steps and Error reporting

It could be that the ground wire isn’t grounded. Depending on which device you’re using, you may need two ground wires. I soldered the three wires on the terminals and had a fourth for grounding. In the USB device I had, I had to have both ground cables touching in the housing unit. What USB to...

PS3 Fault finding YLOD with the SYSCON - First steps and Error reporting

Since fixing this, it’s been fine up until today. I’ve been using it and playing games to test it. No problems turning it off and on. I’ve had it plugged in and the red standby light has been solid. It was the same this morning, however, when coming back today, the red light is no longer...

PS3 Fault finding YLOD with the SYSCON - First steps and Error reporting

@RIP-Felix just wanted to say a huge thank you for your help and the same to everyone else who’s contributed research. I did the fuse and capacitor replacements today. I’ve just tested the system, and bingo! Solid green light and the console turns on and functions normally. Just need to stress...

PS3 Fault finding YLOD with the SYSCON - First steps and Error reporting

It's been over a month since I posted this. I've now got all the parts I need. I ordered some fuses to replace F6001 and some capacitors to replace C6019 and C6020. I also bought the capacitors I knocked off (though these ones are considerably smaller than C1158 and C1438). They are the same...

PS3 Fault finding YLOD with the SYSCON - First steps and Error reporting

Thanks a lot. That’s really helpful. I’ll get the fuses now I know what to look for. That explanation about the slow blow fuse is really helpful. I’ll see if I can find another cheap ps3 of the same model for the other parts I need as I think that will be a safer bet. Appreciate your help on...

PS3 Fault finding YLOD with the SYSCON - First steps and Error reporting

Thanks, the link seems to be bust though. Would something like this fuse work? https://uk.farnell.com/multicomp-pro/mp001602/smd-fuse/dp/3285140 it matches the rest of the spec. Or like this fuse: https://www.mouser.co.uk/ProductDetail/Bourns/SF-1206SP500M-2?qs=fAHHVMwC%252BbjCS5Y4sJXDHA%3D%3D ...
