That's why there are no old ps1 and to some extent ps2 equivalent of the Witcher, or RDR, or TLOU(debatable), there are more games today that compensate for the lack of gameplay with a compelling story than they were a few generations ago.
...The only game I tried that stood well against the test of time was RE4, that game is a masterpiece.
I have to agree that nowadays games, due to technical improvements, can tell stories in a more faceted way. But on the other hand it's a quite superficial thing. If you do a run on SH1 (Ps1) or SH2 (Ps2) (possibily connected to a good CRT), after finished the game, 99% of current gen games will feel flat and weak.
Substance matters more than form and SH2 feeling is still unmatched, even nowadays. This is true for many other old games.
About RE4. I remember when playing it, I had the Ps2 connected to the TV in the living room. I had also a smaller TV in my bedroom with the Ps1 (I used to play with it when my parents were using the TV in the living room). For coincidence a friend borrow me Resident Evil 1 Director's cut, so when the main Tv (with the Ps2) was occupied I played RE1 on Ps1 in my bedroom.
Well, I was really enjoying RE4, but after a couple times on RE1 I started to play this last even when the Ps2 was available.
So it was not nostalgia at all (it was the first time I played both RE1 and RE4). RE4 was excellent, obviously technically more advanced, but RE1 had that stronger feeling, that rigor in mechanics that give you more satisfaction when managing to go on...
It isn't simple to explain, you have to try for understand.
This is just for saying that nostalgia can be misleading in both, for better or for worse. Really, I remembered that SH2 was a strong experience, but playing it again I realized that it was much stronger and better than I remembered.
It can be simple to say: "old is crap, new is better" or viceversa. But the right thing is to compare case by case, not relying on memories, but doing a simultaneous comparison, better if using the correct HW (in case of Ps1/2 they've to be connected to a CRT TV with RGB cable).
