should i update firmware to 4.86?

I have a PS3 with firmware 4.83 and FaQ says it's best to keep it at firmware 4.84, but the tutorial says it's necessary to update to firmware 4.86 to install HEN and I'm now confused.

What tutorial are you speaking of? And my HEN system is at 4.88 using 4.88.2 HFW. Allows me to go online when I want and if I need access the homebrew as well. No reason to use 4.84 or 4.86 as both of those guides sound very outdated seeing as 4.88 has been out over a year.
