When to update a game dumped and running from backup

Hello all, and sorry for my newbie questions always.

I am going to put HFW 4.87 and HEN on a CECH-3004B slim, and then install IrisMAN. My purpose is to dump some of my games from the original discs to the HDD mainly for preservation purposes (i.e. some games that are hard to find and I would rather lock their discs away than risk scratching them everytime we play) but possibly also to speed up starting the game itself. I've found here on the forums the instructions for dumping with IrisMAN and then running from the backup, but here I have a preliminary question.

Some games received various updates back then, and when inserting the disc on a PS3 the first time they can be updated from the internet to the latest version. I was wondering if running the game from the backup means I will be stuck with the version from the disc (which in some case is not good at all), or if it will take into account any update done previously, or even if a game can in fact be updated also when running from the backup.

So in your opinion, should I FIRST update the game from the internet (using the disc) and THEN dump the game to the HDD, or should I do it AFTER? Or does the question even make sense? :) Thanks!

Disc images (*.iso) or files copied from discs ("JB format") are mounted as real discs. Games itself doesn't know that they are not run from original discs, so behaving exactly the same.

You can update from internet just like physical discs or update manually from package install option. And I rather suggesting getting updates on PC because there are a lot of missing XMLs on Sony servers which means games will no longer find the updates. :|

Order about you asking doesn't matter. I see that You asks about that because You thinking that game is installed in the same place as digital distributed game. It isn't. If You want know more:

Thank you!

I've read about many games update patches becoming unavailable, and unfortunately we have some of those (Journey, Little big planet, The Beatles Rock Band...). I don't know how essential are those patches for our games, but when you say you suggest getting updates on PC, do you mean there is a way to get PS3 update patches manually from somewhere, other than triggering updates from the PS3?

Patches are often critically essential. Some games like i.e "Castlevania: Lords of Shadow" deleting saves. Little Big Planet haven't any significant problems but all DLC and free costumes added later will be unavailable without patch version which covering them.

Of course. Directly from Sony servers, they are not secured in any way (PSP (dead?), PSV/PSTV, PS3, PS4 and probably PS5 patches too). Read entire thread:

I suggest to make backups of packages for Your games as they can disappear from servers for eternity without warning. Some already are.
