I've owned and worked on hundreds of PS2's and I've also owned 30 consoles at one stage and I don't think I've ever come across before. I'm in New Zealand and have imported 3 English Consoles and I've never seen that before.

You're actually missing the entire point of this post. The OP DOES NOT want to do what you're suggesting. They want to BUILD a PS2 using the iLink Firewire port for HDD's and other such items that use this faster protocol, while USING the BUILT IN IR receiver from the 50K PS2. It's ONLY PS2's...
