2TB usb drive works on ps3

Might make this a tut if no one has yet but…

I got a 2TB flash drive cheap and I though it would work on the ps3 to transfer files. At first it didn't but I got it working. Long story short the flash drive needs to be less than 32gb in order for default pc programs to format it to fat32. If you install Rufus 3.14 for the pc it allows you to format any flash drive to fat32.

No offense but why would you buy a 2 TB flash drive? The speeds are terrible and they cost about the same as a regular external hdd.

he said it was cheap! the speed would not matter much because PS3 is USB 2.0.
 
It does matter when it comes to transfering files which you will do a lot of with a lot of games which if he bought a 2 TB he probably will have a lot of games. I just got a used 2 TB external for $40 if he's getting it for less than that i get it.

If you have a flash drive and a regular hard drive plug them in your PS3 and transfer some files and compare the two not to mention flash drives break way easier I am speaking from experience. Flash drives are not meant to handle PS3 games and it can likely cause them to die easier and then you lose everything unless you backed them up. It doesn't mean they won't work, but thinking long term how long will the drive last which to me is just as important. I want my games to last forever not a year.

Well i've had games on hdds for 8+ years, every flash drive I had when trying to play intense games like PS3, Wii U died within a year. It is a known fact that flash drives die when trying to play intense 3d games because they're not in fact meant for games. I'm not going to go back and forth on this anymore it's just a fact look it up it's on google only so many read/write cyles on a flash drive. It's a bad investment unless you got it for like $10-$15 then who cares but if it's real I bet they paid a lot more than that.
 
If You doing a lot of writes, then yes, flash drives is not a good idea. That's obvious. ;) But my point is, current HDD are piece of junk also.
 
Well it's not obvious to everyone in this thread. But the idea of a 2 TB flash drive is just stupid to me. The makers of those drives know they're made for storing files like documents and things like that. I guess if you wanted to backup your entire computer that was 2 TB but then even they won't last.

You're right though slim chance a regular hdd lasts forever, but no chance a flash drive trying to play ps3/wii u/xbox 360 games all the time does.

I've got everything backed up but I'm already about to be 40 hopefully by the time both drives die I'll be 60 and in a nursing home. (kidding)
 
Technically there is no difference between i.e SSD or pendrive. In both cases we have the same NAND Flash TLC/QLC/PLC. So it is not stupid and personally I have durable all pendrives since started buying them (SLC/MLC). ;)

If those flash drives will reading and only seldom writing, they should be fine for many many years.

The only long term media today are LTO, BD-R HTL, DVD+M, DVD-RAM and AD. So besides specific BD and DVD, nothing really cheap.
 
Well you're just wrong because if they were the same flash drives wouldn't die in a year. But keep trying to flex your superior knowledge.
 
tbh, flash drives are not too bad. I still have one for the ps2 for ulaunch that's only 512MBs. it's big enough for what it does, but that should suggest how old it is. ;)

Why HDD and why NAND dying depend of various of factors. Less HDDs durable are those which is filled with helium, using SMR and multidiscs. Less NANDs durable are those which works in high temperatures and comes from rejections of factory quality control.

Both words doesn't provide durable and trustable devices, especially if they aren't comes from top manufacturers, and even then, they often cheating client selling under the same model name, different specs...

You said that HDD "last forever and not a one year" that's simply not true. There are high quality HDDs, and there are high quality NANDs. And You know what? There piece of shit HDDs and piece of shit NANDs. That's why peoples making backups in the first place, to duplicate data or putting them in to RAID1. Also saying that: "It is a known fact that flash drives die when trying to play intense 3d games because they're not in fact meant for games" is, well... read it loudly by yourself. :P IMO more trustable are good flash devices than last magnetic one, but both of our opinions comes from personal experiences and very limited statistic probes...
 
2 TB should plenty of room to store a lot of games. no need to write to the drive over and over again just because you have lots of games.

game files are just like any other files. files are only 0's and 1's. do game files have 2's?

cheap drives maybe. good brands will last much longer.
 
Im yet to hear a USB flash drive that is 2TB in capacity (unless this is some sort of NVME drive inside a long and chunky USB enclosure) that was announced by the known flash drive makers (kingston, sandisk, toshiba), since if it does, its likely to have it own product description page on the manufacturer website.

that 2TB usb flash drive is likely to be fake.

I remember reading something about this a while back. You might get a cheap drive that apparently is 32GB (for example) but in reality might only be a few hundred MB or maybe a few GB at most. It's something along the lines of 'looping over the flash' (a term I remember reading) to achieve this, so the capacity looks far greater than it is.

If something seems to good to be true, including a product far cheaper than it should be, there's always almost a good reason why.
 
I'm afraid that you already being scammed by those fake sellers. 2TB USB drive isn't cheap at all. The only 2TB USB drive exists is from Kingston and costs more than $1500.

You can achieve a little bit cheaper by using M.2 sata SSD to USB enclosure and put 2TB M.2 SATA SSD, there you can get an alternative 2TB USB drive albeit little bit bigger in size.
