I think I misunderstood what you were asking about with the fresh hdd.

There is no way to "trick" the ps3 into installing cfw, you must use a hardware flasher(E3 flasher, teensy maybe others I'm not sure) to patch the flash.

As for your question in the post I am quoting, no that wont brick it. The ps3 will just tell you that the data is corrupt.

Is there a way to jailbreak it without CFW? For as I mentioned before, I am from Africa and don't have the funds to buy the flashers, yet alone the PS3 games...
