4.87 CECHCXX PS2 Compatibility improved

Hello, I do not know if this has been raised up and from the search I made I did not find anything; therefore I decided to make this thread.

I had noticed since the 4.87 release in my PS3 CECHC04 model (PS2 BC partially emulated) that the PS2 titles are running better and in some cases significantly. So I tried another PS3 CECHC03 (only diff is the region, one is UK, other is EUR) which had the 4.86 firmware on it. I did this specific test before and after the update: Run Champions of Norath. This game had issues with 4.86 by means of screen "jumping" etc. With 4.87 and after restart the game is playable with no screen jumping. It is worth noting that the PS3s are stock machines with no CFW or anything. I have tried almost all of my PS2 collection discs (over 50 games) and the success rate is much more than 70% at about 90%. GT4 for example plays almost very good but has glitches...I consider this game not compatible. Another example Fallout Brotherhood has serious glitches; I say this because to my verification process any glitch or slow speed or anything; for me it is not compatible.
I have many games that did not run well before the update like Champions of Norath and now are fine.

So if other people have noticed that behavior this is great news. It is confirmed.
Currently and since the PS5 is out these machines will come into demand because with two consoles only (PS5 and PS3) you can play almost all sony physical games library; all in your modern TV. It is something..and I am not the only one who had thought about this.

So to come into conclusion and since CFW is a part of PS3 life's too, developers can check into this new firmware in order to reveal any modification in the code so we can have better emulation for the non BC models (we all know the problems of the first gen machines...and the only way to play PS2 except the BC models is the CFW). Currently the PS2 emulation on the CFW for non BC models is bad...I say this with no disrespect to the DEVS. I respect their work but the emulation is bad.. really bad..it is just like that. Maybe with decomposing 4.87 emulator to have something for the future.

Thanks!

i think i remember seeing someone say that there were changes made to the emus in 4.87 OFW.

you would think sony wouldn't be paying anybody to work on those...but maybe there were some things being tested long ago that finally got released. the semi-BC emu has built-in configs...even just changes to those could improve compatability.

Indeed and it is good for Sony that did that after so many years still supporting this. On the other side they could have made an emulator for the PS5, at least for PS1 and PS2 discs because PS3 is more complicated.

I posted this mostly for the CFW side of things. If the new emulator could help this. I think even Dark Alliance 2 is playing now...a game that was full of glitches..

I think I saw that, afaik they were just saying they are technically not exactly the same, different MD5s, but really it's just the timestamps that have changed cos they were recompiled or something like that.

I'm scratching my head. there's been no changes for the last 2-3 years.

I wonder if @Evilnat is applying some additional (or less) patches that result in the improved compatibility of the PS2 emulator.

It doesn't make sense that 2 firmware almost identical behave different.

Or it could be only a perception... maybe there is a mistake in the way the games are compared (e.g. using ps2_netemu vs ps2_gxemu)

well my memory isn't what it used to be...and it used to be crap LOL. but im probably thinking about what devil303 saw. the files changed but not the code.

I thought OP was talking about OFW compatibility. I don't think Evilnat changed ps2emu codes.

Oh you're right... I read it again "It is worth noting that the PS3s are stock machines with no CFW or anything."

I don't understand then... unless there is a "time bomb" code in the ps2 emulators... LOL.

ps2_gxemu.elf (decrypted) from firmware 4.78 up to firmware 4.82
Bytes size: 6.874.848
MD5: C7681420A7B3A2A6E3BF89F4A12A3DD6

The previous versions of ps2_gxemu.elf from firmware versions older than 4.78 could be identical too, and the versions newer than 4.82 could be identical too
When i made this tables in psdevwiki i only checked a few of them so i cant tell accuratelly

Doubt here, but why many commands on netemu, still unknown?
Yes, there are a lot of unknown commands, is because the reverse engineering of the emulator code doesnt gives a clear indication of what the command does
There are some notes in psdevwiki about details of that unknown commands, but most of that notes are just small hints or speculation

Hello, thanks for posting on this.
I am almost certain that with the 4.87 OFW I have better compatibility for my PAL BC models, I noticed that even with the first PS3 that was on the 4.87 OFW for some time now, but in order to be sure for myself I updated the second one. Also worth noting that one machine has a 250GB SSD whereas the other has the stock 60GB HDD, no difference for PS2 games ( a lot for PS3 games..e.g. Il-2)
So for me..I am certain, but in order to consider this as a fact someone else must confirm this too.

In regards to the CFW, I tried both Evilnat's and Ferox CFW to my slim model and found both of these inferior to rebug..but hell what do i know?? Reading the posts above it seems to me that i use the wrong emulator...
When the slim had the 4.8.6.1 Rebug on it i have tried a lot with the PS2 games...I was disappointed from the compatibility and the various programs. Generally spoken i see no point of having so many programs outside the CFW since to my mind the CFW should be an "all inclusive" solution for the user like in other consoles. Currently i tried one game with Evilnat and i closed after 1 min or so..a lot of slowdowns, zoomed in..real crap.., and that would be NFS Underground, a game that runs fine in the BC model even with 4.86.
Please enlighten me if you can of what I am doing wrong with the emu and the CFW..
