I was told it does not read disc.
How do I check if it can install full CFW version?
or is it safe to install full CFW version?
Or should I just use the "nobd" CFW version?

The fact it is on 4.87 OFW means it been updated very recently, so there is little chance of a BD logic board issue. It probably has a laser or mechanism problem. This is not a big deal really when it comes to CFW, it will not affect it at all.

If you can install any free app from the store like amazon TV, netflix etc etc, and it runs successfully you know the BD drive logic board is fine and married to the console

TBH there is no point checking, You can just patch it using ps3 toolset and then try to install normal CFW, there is no risk. If the FW install fails at approx 80% (I think) then that points to a logic board issue. In that case you can still install a NoBD firmware then

Just install normal CFW after patching it with PS3 Toolset.

The main risk you can come up against is if you were on unpatched OFW and then it went into an update loop. If that happened while on OFW you would have no way to install a NoBD CFW so would be stuck in the loop. Once you patch your system with PS3 Toolset via ** ** www.ps3xploit.net > Domain no Longer owned by team** (NEW URL = http://ps3toolset.com) > Domain no Longer owned by team** (NEW URL = http://ps3toolset.com you do not have to worry about this.

No BD CFW is only for PS3s with broken or not attached Logic boards as those can not run any apps normally, Laser/mechanical issues have no affect on CFW.
