4.93 EVILNAT (Cobra 8.5)

PS3 4.93 Evilnat w/ Cobra v8.5 - (CEX/PEX/D-PEX) 4.93

i installed 4.90 evil nat before the new update. but i don't recall what version of these i installed.

PEX-CEX
D-PEX DEX
CEX
DEX

does it matter what one i install? i just need to update.

Go to Cobra Tools and then go to the information section. It will tell you what is CEX/DEX on your system.

Oh, already released? Nice. Thanks for the links, @STLcardsWS. Friendly advice: I suggest editing the 4.91 OFW release threads (both https://www.psx-place.com/threads/ps3-4-91-firmware-released-do-not-update.42992/ and https://www.psx-place.com/threads/ps3-firmware-4-91-update-is-live-hfw-and-cfw-available.42990/) for including the Dual-Boots releases to make people like me find them more easily. I'll appreciate it :)!

Oh and another thing. So WebMan Mod should be updated not after but before updating to 4.91, right? After all this time, how could I miss this o_O?! However, I'm glad I've never found any issues with WebMan Mod, but I'll consider doing the right way now. And what about IrisMan 4.91?

For 4.91 it doesn't matter if webMAN MOD is updated to the latest version or not. LV2 kernel is practically the same as 4.81-4.89.
So webMAN MOD already supports these offsets. Same for IRISMAN.

However I recommend to update both software.

When trying to update xai_plugin, a message appears saying: "An error ocurred during the download operation. (80710A06)".

There are no updates available. Why are you attempting to update it?

By the way, this error typically indicates that your date and time settings are incorrect, or you are trying to access a server that is returning an error, most likely due to an unsupported SSL certificate.

This issue is common on DEX vsh, because it's from version 4.84, which uses outdated certificates and is the default vsh in EvilNat PEX/DEX/D-PEX. Swap your vsh with the CEX version, and you'll be able to download updates when they become available.

BTW this error means that your date and time are wrong or you are trying to access a server that is returning an error, mostly like with unsupported SSL certificate.

Because I didn't know there were no updates? Anyway, do updates usually add (and maybe remove) features, as well as fix them? How often are they released? Does a new Evilnat version always have a new xai_plugin version?

The time and date are right and I just clicked to update the xai_plugin, nothing more. What message should I get, then? I installed the [PEX] version and didn't change the VSH. Besides, what's that VSH? I only know the PSP's VSH menu (and saw some pictures regarding webMAN MOD's VSH menu). How can I swap my VSH?

EDIT: I changed to [CEX XMB Mode] (I find it odd it was in [DEX XMB Mode] when I'm sure I didn't click this setting) and now when updating the xai_plugin it says "HTTP Status code: 404" again. You mean, the default VSH in Evilnat [DEX] and [D-PEX], not in [PEX] as well?

How can I know xai_plugin's latest version? Is it indicated in some GitHub repository or in some website? Also, should I use the "Fix CBOMB" setting even if not having a dead CMOS battery?

I don't think there's a way to swap VSH. It's possible to swap virtually everything else through CEX2DEX but I haven't seen a VSH option.

EvilNat doesn't update xai very often and the latest version is the one in the CFW.

After changing your vsh to cex you are getting error 404 because there is no update file in the URL.

You can see the xai updates in his github, but the source there and pkg are from last year, he'll release the updated source when every bug has been fixed.

So maybe then he will.be able to send updates if needed

@Evilnat I suggest you to host the xai update icon online and when a update is available you change the icon with a new one (i usually make an update icon with a little orange dot on it, to show that there is an update) and the users will be able to see that there is an update.

How would I manually apply the overclock for the current PEX/CEX variant? I'm more than happy to tinker, just need to know what to change.

It would be easier if a message saying no updates had been found appeared instead of appearing a message saying that. Do xai_plugin updates add and/or remove/fix options?

But I can't find a reference to xai_plugin's current version in its GitHub repo.

I like your idea, but a fallback icon would be needed in-case an internet connection isn't available/server can't be connected to. Perhaps notifying the user would be simpler. If no connection is available, updates are simply not checked and no message is shown. However, if there is a connection and an update, it could show a notification like "An update is available for xai_plugin. Use the option in Custom Firmware Tools to download it."

I don't mean to be ignorant as I haven't been able to find a definitive explanation and am quite new to some of the terminology.

I was wondering what the xai_plugin refers to and what purposes it serves? Is this already integrated into the CFW? I'm familiar with the VHS menu via Webman (holding in the SELECT button), but not sure if they're related?

Is the xai_plugin a feature that needs to be updated?

Would be thankful if someone could make clear its functionality and how to use it and how to possibly update it? I'm currently on CEX 4.90

Thought I'd also ask if you think there'll be more iterations of 4.91 CEX anytime soon? If not, I'd consider updateing assuming all the bugs have been addressed.

In the case of Evilnat's CFW, you can look at xai_plugin as its features. It's a file located in dev_flash/vsh/module that is responsible for all the cool stuff the CFW can do. Without any disrespect intended, Evilnat CFW without this plugin is essentially just Ferrox.

To answer your other questions:
1. It's not crucial to update, but would be recommended to download should there be one available. When an update is available, you can use the option in Custom Firmware Tools.

2. There are currently no updates for 4.90.

3. Other than the overclocked, nobt/nobd patched versions, I don't there will be any other versions of 4.91 (excluding any potential future updates).

EDIT: if a moderator can fix my link, that'd be appreciated.

Why would it. DEX is for game developers, and you can't develop PS1 / PS2 games on a PS3 - they have their own devkits. tbh it's a bit weird that PS3 devkits play retail games at all - devkits of most other consoles can only play debug builds.

Why are you on DEX in the first place? DEX is only needed if you develop homebrew or need TMAPI.
Also, I'm not sure which CoD you were trying to play but if it's BO2 or a later title in the franchise you need an anti-ban EBOOT.
i was on dex because i used matrix menus for recoveries, as some non hosts are dex only, so when i went to 4.91 i used evilnats dex so i can still continue to use the dex only non hosts. ive used non anti ban eboots and i havent gotten banned once. but that didnt answer my question lmfao

Thank you for very much for your detailed response! I think I understand it better now.

I've been able to locate it in the menu. I've never had to update it in the past ever since I installed CFW as I was never aware of it, so I've never thought of it. It still allows me to download the install package when I press the update option, but I'm not sure what changes it would make once installed. If I were to proceed, would it offer me anything I already don't have or re-install what I already have?

Would this be the only way to update it?

My third question relating to whether to update or not had to do whether you think the current CEX 4.91 build is stable? Seems like all bugs have been addressed? If so, I will certainly update.

Appreciate your help!
