PS3 60gb phat PS3 can’t read (or rip) SACD

Hi everyone, apologies if I don't get a lot of terminology or the process correctly - I've had this ps3 for like, 20 years, but I only just started exploring CFW stuff today, as I wanted to rip a couple of discs I couldn't otherwise find existing rips of online. I really haven't had the need until now.

I've gotten as far as installing evilnat 4.92.2 + cobra 8.5 CEX - I assume this was the correct option. I've also installed the SACD-Ripper .pkg

however, it just tells me the disc is not recognized as an SACD. Just as a sanity check, I tried one more disc and the behavior is the same. Both discs are clean.

I scrolled through to the music tab in the xmb and it shows the disc is inserted and prompts me to play back the "audio CD" - I guess it is only recognizing the CD layer of these hybrid SACDs.

I also can't seem to find any setting related to SACD playback in the settings xmb menus.

Is it possible I disabled or broke something during the installation of this CFW? Are there some other steps I'm supposed to take that I'm oblivious to?

Hi,
I would guess that the laser in your BD drive is bad. I have replaced a few and one of the first things that stops working when the laser starts to go bad is SACD. I guess it is a BD-400 in your PS3. BD-410 normally does not read SACD (except for a few that have been replaced by SONY or those in CECHE01-MG). When buying a new laser (KES-400) via eBay or AliExpress - expect that half of them are bad from the start (extremely poor quality in my experience). Some do not read SACD and/or BD discs and/or DVDs and so on... Try to buy from someone who has a right of withdrawal (in your country) or a recognized good seller.

Unfortunately, the lasers in the BD-400 are not very reliable from the start (wear out quickly) and there is only one laser for all formats it reads. The BD-410 has two lasers and is more reliable, but harder to find as SACD compatible. Also - you cannot put a KES-410 laser unit in a BD-400 reader unit.

What you can look for if you want an SACD compatible BD-410 is if you find a CECHC.. that starts the serial number with 08-.... these may possibly have an SACD compatible BD-410, then 08-... indicates that they have been serviced by SONY at some point and possibly had the BD reader replaced. You can determine this by asking how it feeds the discs. If it feeds the discs straight in/out, it is a BD-400. If it spins the disc approx. 1/4 when feeding in/out, it is a BD-410. You can also try to get a CECHE01-MG which has these SACD-compatible BD-410s as standard (if it hasn't been replaced). If you find a broken PS3 with an SACD-compatible BD-410 drive, you can easily remarry it to your working PS3.

This way I have managed to get SACD-compatible BD-410s in all my PS3s. (CECHA01, CECHB01, CECHC04 and CECHE01-MG) :adoration:
Good luck!

No, You couldn't broke anything in that matter.

Which exactly package you installed? You need v0.38 modified by DeanK AFAIR. Unfortunately, search option not working but around month or two ago, some user struggle with SACD ripping on current CFW and that version solved his problems.

Hey triforcer, thank you for all the tips. Unfortunately I think you're right about the cause of these issues - I did a little more testing and discovered that I also can't read any PS2 games or DVD movies, which presumably would use the same wavelength of laser as SACD. Bummer!

I probably will have the whole system overhauled "eventually" as honestly, the drive was the least of its problems as far as I was aware. It always overheated badly (even since day 1!) so I figured new thermal paste would eventually be needed at a minimum, and probably other things should be gone over too at this point like capacitors, PSU, CMOS battery, etc.

all the info was VERY helpful though and I will definitely come back to this thread for reference should I attempt a drive or laser swap myself. I am officially out of a way to play ps2 games now so I will need something, eventually.

Also good to know! It's possible I may encounter that problem should the laser ever get fixed so I will keep that in mind but at this point I am leaning toward the probability that it is just an unforeseen hardware issue.

I have a PS3 (BD-400) that does not see hybrid SACD when such a disc is inserted - only the CD track. When I put in a pure SACD (no CD-layer), it appears after a short while and can be played. If I then put in a hybrid SACD again afterwards, it sees both CD and SACD (and plays both). I don't know if this is due to a 'suspicious' laser, but it is the most likely thing...

.

I highly recommend that you get your machine cleaned with new thermal paste. I do this delid myself (with the right tools), but if you haven't tried it on a broken machine before, you should consider having someone who has done it before (many times and successfully) do it before you try it yourself.

Since you are already running CFW, you already have a better fan curve that keeps the machine at a maximum of 68°C (unless you have changed it, but that should be your maximum temperature). On top of that, it doesn't hurt to have a so-called "undervolting".

But enough about that - if you plan to take your BD reader apart, I recommend a good video that shows all the steps, like this one.

I previously had a thread about SACD regarding lasers:

In my experience, for a lot of times the drive just won't recognise the SACD part of a hybrid SACD even if DVDs like PS2 discs works fine. I had to keep ejecting and reinserting the SACD for it to be detected. You should probably get a replacement if it doesn't even play PS2 discs though.

As for the ripper please try this one that I made specifically to target the 4.92 firmware. I couldn't find the Deank one mentioned in one of the replies so I made this. It worked fine on my Evilnat 4.92.2 install and I have ripped several discs with it.
