Another old guy looking to tinker around....

Hi All

As above ive never really registered on forums but thought this time is was worth it....had a history of messing around with tech. Modding, repairing upgrading pretty well anything....

I CFW'd my brothers PS3 last year successfully - an old slim system. My bother in law gave me a CECH-2503 yesterday so thought id have a crack at modding it....ive installed the HFW with the HEN interface and its a bit hit or miss on the booting of HEN. Is this the best there is at the moment...Id love to be able to install a permanent CFW if thats at all possible...eventually.

Looking forward to being schooled in PS3 tinkering! :)

Cheers

Hi.

Possible if Your factory fw is 3.55 or less (or maybe 3.56 or less, I don't remember now). You can check that by trying to install MinVerCheck PUP. This model series was released with old boot loader and with new one and this is why You must check this (on new type, You are doomed for now to HEN only). Read the docs at ps3xploit site and use toolset for such task.

Everyone is old in this forum lol. Try to run backups on that console, the bd drive on fats and slims is very crappy.

Thanks lads....didnt expect a reply this quick (or a number of them for that matter...)

It was given to me with 3.61 on there but hes had it for years....i know its had firmware updates done to it....

So what youre saying is if i run that tool itll say what it was originally shipped with??

There are 2 ways to know if the PS3 model is compatible with CFW, the classic one (used since lot of time ago) was by installing this
https://www.psx-place.com/resources/minverchk-minimum-version-checker.610/
You need to install it as a normal firmware from USB... but dont get scared is not going to install anything... the only thing it does is to display a warning text on screen where you can see the minimal firmware version acepted by your PS3 model

The other way is by entering the ps3exploit bguerville tooolkit, it have a screen where is displayed that info

Ok - but what thatll say is the firmware it was shipped with...ie not 3.61 which is what i got it with today...

That depends on what your minimum factory firmware version is; the highest version compatible with CFW is 3.56. Any higher, i.e. 3.60 and above, is not compatible with CFW.

My model for example, is a slim 2503A and mine has a base factory firmware of 3.50 - of course yours may differ so it's important to verify. I'd suggest using bguerville's Flash Memory Manager tool and what you are looking for is this:

If you see that, then you're set and can use the FMM to patch your NOR flash, reboot and install CFW.

Ok - thanks very much for that - assuming it is downgradable i think ill need some help with that flash procedre - (ive not done that before) - sounds......very bricky..... :)

You don't need to downgrade, just update to 4.86, open the PS3 browser and go to:

** www.** ** www.ps3xploit.net > D... (NEW URL = http://ps3toolset.com)/bgtoolset/

It will tell you if the PS3 is CFW compatible or not.

You're welcome, and as @jcorrea says, downgrading is not necessary - besides, you would need a hardware flasher to do so. While we will be more than happy to assist should you be unsure of anything, if indeed your console is CFW compatible then if you've already installed CFW on your brother's PS3 last year (as opposed to HEN which is not the same as CFW) this will be even easier as bguerville's PS3 Toolset is virtually foolproof. Bricking is impossible provided you read the instructions in the release post carefully. In other words, just do not toggle FMM Strict Mode to OFF, and you have zero chance of a brick.

Read the official release post thoroughly, to ensure you get the Toolset working in the PS3 web browser. See also this post for step-by-step instructions on how to jailbreak a CFW console with the PS3 Toolset.

Hope this helps, and hope your PS3 is CFW compatible otherwise this information is of little use to you lol

Yeah, that's good. Update your PS3 to 4.86 and follow @Coldheart2236 instructions to install CFW.

ok- found the QA software - its on the USB drive to flash (which i am trying....) it just goes back to the XMB (it doesnt beep) so i guess its not taking (tried it a few times) - is it a case of "keep trying" and itll eventually go, or, if it doesnt go on first time its not going to....

its easiest to use rebug toolbox to enable qa flag. it will tell you if its enabled or not. if you dont already have it installed, it should be under package manager already (it comes with rebug). after installing it, open it and goto last column to find it. qa flag lets you install a lower firmware than you are already on (downgrade). its best to enable and leave it enabled.

There are a couple of standalone PKG's to switch the QA flag... but as mentioned above now that you have rebug installed the best way to do is is by using the "rebug toolbox" shipped with rebug firmwares
Just incase you dont know what is rebug toolbox... is a program pre-installed with rebug... go to the icon "install package files" under XMB game column and install it from there

After the installation of rebug toolbox... enter in the program and you will see an option to enable/disable the QA flag
Also... that same option serves as an indication of the actual state of the QA flag... if you see it reported as "enabled" then dont use it (because it would mean is already enabled, hehehe)
And btw, remember to reboot the PS3 (and check again inside rebug toolbox) to verify that is still enabled

Brilliant - all done....heres where the questions really start (actually getting stuff running!)

So, many thanks lads. Ive registered with a few hacking forums over the years but getting a reply is a once-in-a-blue moon affair but this has been a refreshing change. Id say, "ill hope to add to the forum where i can..." but at the moment i think ill be the one asking all the stupid questions (probably really stupid) as well.

Without registering on here i probably would have been languishing in HFW land!!. Thanks again (im off to go and paint the sitting room ceiling) so may not get the chance to ask any more stupid questions for a little while....

Top stuff.! :)

Back so soon....got a break while paint is drying....how do i find the PS3's ip ? (i seem to remember it somewhere in multiman....)

Scrub that...found it...in the network settings...

Pleased you're all up and running, and also, there really aren't any stupid questions. :) We pick things up as we go along, but we have to start somewhere. I knew nothing about PS3 modding prior to 2018, but have picked up things since then as I find it easier to learn about things that interest me.
