Backwards Compatible PS3 On UHD TV Quality?

Okay, so I'm new here, however I've been in the PS3 scene since about 2011, so any advanced terminology will be understood.

Anyways, I'm looking into buying a backwards compatible PS3 and running the PS3xploit writer on it. My question is, will my PS2 games look okay on a UHD TV? I am a huge fan of a few games that will not run on any emulators, and run like trash on my slim PS3. I know I won't get insane quality or anything like that, I just want to be able to play my old games and have it be bearable quality-wise. On the slim PS3, some games are, and some look like trash.

Can anyone with a UHD TV or even an HD TV with a backwards compatible console provide some input here? Thanks!

I meet the criteria. The games look great on my 4K Screen but make sure you don't have a TV with bad input lag. The PS3 introduces input lag to old PS2 & PS1 games and that can be even worse if you have a TV with high input lag.

With that being said, I use my PS3's BC to play a lot of PSX & PS2 games. PS2 games that are native 480p play much better than native 480i games. I am going to work on a nice thread about this topic after the new years.

Thank you for the response! I know what I'll be buying next.

Since the fat PS3s are getting old now, how would you suggest avoiding hardware failure? I'm considering getting a cooling fan and making sure the console is given enough space for ventilation, but I am concerned that it may fail soon regardless of what I do to prevent it. I've done some research and it looks like heat is the biggest cause, but I'm not certain if there's other issues. The Blu-Ray drive won't get any use, so that will help keep that from going.

My cecha01 ps3 is hooked up to a 4k tv and I haven't played ps1 games yet but ps2 games do look quite good for a game that's only 480i/p. I'd say it's looking better than my previous 1080p tv but then again it looks great regardless.

My suggestion is to turn off upscaling but of course leave smoothing on. Now as for input lag that the previous poster mentioned, I honestly don't notice it and believe me I absolutely hate input lag (I couldn't play Killzone 2 or 3 because of the shitty input lag). Then again the tv is set to game mode and Sony and Samsung tvs usually have very low input lag in my experience which I couldn't say the same for an LG tv I once had even in game mode. So I do imagine the problem amplifies itself with a shit tv but a good tv shouldn't have this problem.

There is input lag on the PSX&PS2 emulators. A good way to see this in action is play Gran Turismo 4 in 480i and then switch to 480p. Night and day difference.

I have played gt4 in 480i and p and the input lag I just can't notice any in either setting. Now im not denying there is any but I just can't notice it at all. What I know for certain is the tv is the biggest factor and I'm sure that certain tvs might have enough input lag to be noticed in 480i with the ps3s input lag but just not enough to be noticed in 480p.

I'm actually pretty surprised that the input lag would be increased by playing a PS2 or PSX game on a backwards compatible system. How can you tell if a game is 480i or 480p?

The ps2 games have an option for progressive scan (only a few games have this option) which is 480p, if there isn't a progressive scan option it's 480i. What allegedly happens is that the deinterlacer the ps3 uses apparently causes input lag but the thing is I just don't notice it, the response time is always the same for me whether I use a ps2 or whatever settings I use with the ps3. I assume it's just the tv people use because I just don't notice it on my Sony bravia and my 4k samsung tv

Now as for ps1 games, I don't know as they always are 240p so the deinterlacer wouldn't be on so I don't know why that would be the case. Granted like the ps2 games, I don't notice any input lag when I play the ps1 games on the ps3. Honestly this is the first time I've ever heard of input lag with ps1 games on the ps3 but then again I just haven't looked into it.

Ah that makes sense. I have a Vizio, I think the M series, which has a little more input lag than others, but I don't ever notice it on the PS4 Pro, so I think it should be bearable.

I have a Vizio M43-c1 which has like 10ms Input Lag on its HDMI5 port (pretty damn low for a TV) and I can tell the difference. It's very slight but it's there. Another way to see the input lag in action is to play Dance Dance Revolution or Parappa the Rapper (games with strict button pressing).

It's also entirely possible that you are now used to the input lag!

Oh and another tidbit, try playing the games with component hookups. I found the games looked better on component compared to HDMI due to the "softness" of the analog video stream compared to the perfect digital video stream from HDMI. I picked up official Sony component cables for $5 on eBay recently and love the old games on them!
