Backwards Frankenstein

Hi everyone, new guy here please be gentle.

I've read about the Frankenstein mod, fitting a later model RSX to an early model Phat, but would it work in reverse?

I have a CECHL with a VER001 board, fitted with a CDX2991BGB 65nm RSX which has died, could the CDX2971 90nm fit as a straight swap?
I know this is counter-intuitive but Im having a tough time locating anything other than 90nm RSX.

you're better off doing a 65/40nm swap. It's possible, just not done often, if ever. There's a reason people are avoiding 90nm rsx. the 90nm are believed to be less reliable/defective. My advice is either find a 65nm on ali or harvest one from a working slim console. You can easily find them pre-balled on ali. If you do go that route I suggest buying more than one, hungshung is usually a reliable vendor that honors returns.
 
Good day, has there been any developments in the process? Just curious about doing something similar.
 
It's not hard to find a 65/40nm RSX. That's like saying you can't find a working PS3 slim anywhere. Just harvest from one of those consoles and be done with it. Why take the path of most resistance?
