PS2 Best DVD that will not scratch ?

Hello . I've been giving some attention to my PS2 lately and i came upon some questions . As most of you have read, the best DVDs would be Verbatim , those with MCC code . But they will scratch so easily because they don't have a hard coat , such as Blurays . It's a paradox, DVDs will scratch more easily but they work even like that . But when a bluray gets medium scratched the whole game could be rendered useless ( GTA 5 anyone ? ) .

So my questions are :

1 . Do genuine PS2 DVDs have a hard coat ? I believe they don't .
2. Can you use Verbatim hard coat DVDs on PS2 ? There are some Gold ones , anyone tried those ?
3 . Do Verbatim Data Life Plus have a hard coat ? How are they more reliable than regulars ?
3. DVD+R are more resistant to scratches than DVD-R ? When i look at old backups , those on DVD+R just look better .
4. Will DVD+R work ok if patched to DVD_VIDEO ( ESR type patch ) ?
5. If the burning speed is 8x would that be a problem ? I can't find some with 4x .

Thanks

The best solution is to just stop scratching discs. Learn how to handle them.

All DVDs just like CDs can be easily scratched, no matter format. Only BDs are extra protected.

Not all PS2 ODDs reading DVD+R/M. Many indeed so in such cases better to use them. All reading DVD-R and DVD-ROM. Almost none DVD-/+RW. And none DVD-RAM.

None of the ODD knows what speed was used to wrote a disc.

DVD+R and DVD+M have additional correction data. If ODD support it, I recommend to use it. I don't know if this is more stressful for laser or at least in measurable scale. I always using it, yet in those times discs can be found in top quality, the same as burners, and today, well not really, not any more (except DVD+M but they are expensive and ODDW can low quality burn it).

Anyway, I would avoid using discs at all. It is better to spare the ODD for rescue tasks instead of playing games. IMO. ;]

I will try to find some quality discs like DataLifePlus or Archival Gold .
I noticed all DVD DL blanks are +R , haven't seen one that is -R . I wonder if genuine PS2 DL games also use the +R technology .

Original games are on pressed discs... In case of PS2, on CD-ROM and DVD-ROM (single and double layered). However they are little different than standard one so personally I'm using terms: "PS2CD-ROM" and "PS2DVD-ROM".

Anyway, i don't think PS2 can read M-Disc

DVD M-Discs are the same as DVD+R but on none-organic layer, more similar to pressed discs. If Your ODD reading DVD+R, it will read also DVD+M. Blu-Ray M-Discs are totally the same as BD-R HTL but high quality (like in old days awesome Panasonic's BD-R HTL).

Some burners allow to disguise DVD+R as DVD-ROM which is called "bit setting". Worth to use it if You have such possibility as increasing detection rate by some ODDs (I don't know if in case of PS2 too, but You have nothing to loose as this will not make any read or detection problems).

If You will gluing label to the disc it makes it not well balanced as before, which makes for ODD harder to read it. And it is possible that used glue will react with plastic top layer. In theory it is safe, but TBH better is avoiding additional risk.

If You really want some labels, better try ODDW with special top layer discs which allows You print on them.

The only DVD-R's that I have used in the past (for Gamecube backups) are Ritek G04 mini-DVD's.

They are more difficult than most to scratch but again they are mini-DVD recordable. I'm not sure if they even make them anymore.

I tried printable DVD-R and DVD+R DL but my console always scratches them in a circular shape , did this happen to you or it's just me ? The DVD-R is made by MCC, best i could find . Can this happen if i open up the cover while the disc is spinning ?

If it's a slim model, it's probably the ribbon cable doing it.

I don't think it's the ribbon because it only gets to the outer area of the disc and this scratch is just near the centre .
Maybe this is causing it ?

Please take into account that this is a Verbatim DVD-R ( made by MCC ,best i could find ) and it's patched with FreeDVDBoot

Ritek are better that CMC ? What do you think ?

I have heard that CMC's are the worst. And I like Ritek's but I am not sure if they are made in full size or only mini-DVD.

My PS2 slim used to scratch discs also until I pushed down (flattened, sort of) the ribbon cable that is attached to the DVD drive.

RITEK-S04-66 not working on SCPH 90004 0D but working on 70004 .
CMC MAG-D03-64 working on both .
MKM-003-00 possibly working on 90004 ( need to test )

Is the 90004 series more picky with discs ? I wish i had all the models and test :D
I like testing and charts .
