I own a ps3 slim ofw 4.84 and I would like to know what's the best way for me to jailbreak it. Should I update the ofw or keep it on this one?

It really depends on the jailbreak type.
If you load the PS3 Toolset's Flash Memory Manager in the PS3 browser, it will tell you whether or not the console is CFW compatible.

If your ps3 slim is compatible with CFW then you can jailbreak it using the PS3 Toolset's Flash Memory Manager (FMM) on 4.84.
Then you can install Rebug REX 4.84.
Alternatively you can install ofw 4.86 then jailbreak it with FMM & install Rebug Lite 4.86. There is no Rebug REX for 4.86, the last REX is for 4.84.
The difference is that with Rebug REX, you can toggle between cex & dex mode which can be useful for certain things, depending on how you use your ps3.
Either way, once on CFW you can upgrade or downgrade firmware as you wish as long as you toggle the QA flag with Rebug Toolbox so basically, you can change between REX & Lite if you choose to.
If you decide to install Rebug REX 4.84 , you will need to spoof the firmware version with SEN Enabler if you want to use PSN.

If your console is not CFW compatible, you will probably use HEN in which case I would recommend to update to hfw 4.86.
