Broken BD drive on PS3 in update loop with OFW

Hi everyone,
I'm in a difficult situation and I need some help…
A friend of mine gave me his old PS3, everything is working except for the Blu-Ray Drive. The first time I turned it on I saw it was doing a fw update but because of the broken BD drive now it's stuck in an update loop I can't get out of…
I don't know which fw is installed on the PS3 but I assume it's the 4.53 OFW. No one ever installed a CFW on this PS3.
I searched on this forum for a solution to my problem but everything I found required a console with a CFW installed. I tried to use a No-BD fw but it didn't work, I tried to downgrade the console but I can't get into FSM, I was thinking about replacing the bd logic board but I read it requires the re-marry that can only be done on a modded console…
I don't know what to do, could anybody help me please?
Thanks!!!

The logic board does not need to be married for the FW update to succeed, it only needs to be married to actually use the drive/boot apps. Check the ribbon cable is attached correctly etc and try update again, if no luck then you will need a another logic board afaik, you could just borrow one so you can get updated to 4.82, then exploit and use NoBD CFW if its required.

Thanks! I'll try!

------------------EDIT------------------

I borrowed a bluray drive from a friend's PS3 and I finally got out of the update loop! I updated to 4.82 then mounted again the old drive and finally installed a NoBD CFW and now everything's working fine! Thanks a lot!!!

You would not be able to make a NoBD OFW, the PS3 will not install it as the CoreOS has the be patched to disable the integrity checks it does iirc and this is part of CFW and the jail-breaking process.

You need to get a logic board for your model PS3 and it will update, they don't cost much.

Should work as long as the logic or BD daughter board is fine as that's all that's needed to update, then when you on CFW you can install a NoBD CFW to bypass the issue or no app or game will launch, you will get a black screen .

I had the loop on a CHECHG Console with no (known) broken BD drive on about 74%.
I did not notice it was broken before the loop started...
No luck with other BD drives - I tried a bunch.
As I had blue LED visible on the original BD drive and did not think it was broken I thought the logic board should be fine.
The drive did not sound funny or anything - it still accepted discs and it spit em out fine too - the blue led worked too.

(in hindsight it did not behave normal on startup after I fixed it I see way more blue led and trying to check if a disc is inside on startup than before i got this "fixed")

So I wondered if the issue was maybe not the BD logic board but some other part like laser or motor.
I put the original BD logic board in another BD from another model PS3.

Now I noticed when I powered it on it would give me even more blue led and the drive would make funny sounds - the motor must be broken or the drive does not work because now it does not accept any discs any more if I press eject it will sound like a machine gun.

So status is - now the drive is for sure broken - but I get more blue LED so there was a change somewhere and it was time to give the update another try.

So I just waited.
The loop started again and just before it reached 100% (sweet) the blue LED indicated again...

So there really is a check just at the end of the update on the BD drive and somehow it must check the laser or motor controllers too.
If your update loops at 74% there is a chance your logic board is still fine but the BD mechanics or optics are somehow not in shape.

The PS3 was unbricked and is working again.

I however found this specific "technique" nowhere in any forum so I thought I share it as it is a pretty stupid was to solve the loop and I guess it can spare you some headache if it works for you too.

At this moment the BD drive is not working it does not accept any discs.
However the ps3 thinks its working - I will only install T2 linux so I don't need it any more.
But ill test if all is working and if I see some issues ill report back and update this post again with more info.

Stay save guys and get your PS3 fixed - good luck ;)

Ok the PS3 does not think the BD drive is fine.
Running on a nobd firmware now and have linux installed - had to use the nobd fw to get to install linux.
I could try adding the old BD drive again and check if it works but for this PS3 the journey ends here - I will use it as a NAS - no need to further troubleshoot for me.

Hmm.. I'll try to let it functional with Rebug 4.86 instead of a noBD cfw, I read that that it has some limitations, but not so sure. Besides, the next time you need to write some FW, you'll have the same problem. I could add that problem with the OG drive with the blue light blinking is just a mechanism problem that you can fix easliy (at least what I faced with one I had), sensors issue.

You didn't try updating with only the pcb connected to the mobo?

There is no check on any other components like lasers or motors. I have often ran consoles with just the logic board attached. You probably have an issue with your ribbon cable or the connector on the motherboard or something like that.

how would this work on a Super Slim? I kinda screwed it up when repasting it and the 9pin lens cable broke. it seems i broke more than that though since the drive doesnt spin up or anything. its on HFW 4.92 with hen but it kinda sucks if its just kaput. Not like id ever need to reinstall updates unless something gets completely broken or when i change the internal drive iitll get stuck because i do plan to upgrade the internal drive and restore my stuff via system backup tool on the ps3.

I did a SystemFile Checker and it passed but im not sure if it needs the BD intact for that

Super-Slims (and 25xx/30xx Slims) don't have a Blu-Ray logic board anymore (its functionality has been integrated into the motherboard) so they're immune to that specific update loop (they can still go into that update loop if Bluetooth/Wi-Fi is broken).

Thank you for clearing that up. Ive had everyone telling me my system will brick
