Buying help

Phat or slim ver 2000 odd and below can have CFW, slim ver 3000 and above can't have CFW only HEN

CFW ability is best for me

Side note searching works and info in on the board

And dont buy the slim 3000 series. at all. you can still instal han or hen on them. but they are the worst ps3 i have ever seen.

What's the chances a 2501B will work?

For the 25XX series or even if your unsure about any of the models it is reccomnded you run the minverchk PUP >> (DOWNLOAD) & (How to use Minverchk) its a simply utility that show the factory installed firmware on your ps3 and for the CECH-25XX model if the utility shows 3.56 or lower you are compatible but if it shows 3.60 and higher that means your are NOT compatible to use the Flash Writer (CFW enabler for 4.82 CFW)

As info given here

I recommend you any CECH4xxx. Specially the last round, 43xxB/C cause they're cool as f$#@. I have one and is the coolest among the others. With a 45nm CELL and a 28nm RSX, with webman mod, the interior of that PS3 is freezing. Sure, you have hardware problems like in any other PS3, but nothing soo serious. You can use HEN only, but that's enough for me. You can find it on black, white, red and blue.

BTW, use every PS3 connected to a stabilizer. Except for fats.

And because of HEN limitations, currently all models without CFW install possibility are junk. For me, most important thing is EID Root Key, which cannot be obtained on such crippled models. Also CECH-3xxx/4xxx are made cheap and looks ugly. Sorry. ;p

I know, you're a developer haha, but that's not the case of everyone. In my case I only use the PS3 to play PS3 games, not PS2, maybe some PSX, but nothing retro. And about everything you can do on CFW, I'm really not insterested in all of that. I have a PS3 for online gaming only, and I only play one game online.
The reason I recommend 4xxx models is because they're the most reliable out there, have less consumption, no need to remarried the BD and it's like you said, cheap. The common problems it has are fixable, the majority of them, but on fatties we have another story. And don't believe that I don't like them, because I do, I had a 40Gb which died after only +3 years, and bought a SS that it's still running and never had a problem, I bought that on 2013. Now I'm trying to repair my BCs, it's a lot of work though.

If You don't care about retrieving i.e saves in case of dead console, and as You said You playing only few games, then indeed, CFW features are not in spectrum of Your needs. But I believe You are in minority and worth to mention about such things before this guy will buy the console, just in case he is interested in this and to avoid possible future disappointment when he discover that i.e reading ERK is (currently) impossible. ;)
