I've got the latest OFW 4.86 installed, and I wanted to install a demo that's been removed from the PSN a long time ago, NBA Live 09 demo to be exact, can I install it onto my OFW 4.86 PS3 by just carrying over a pkg file from an 8 gb usb flash drive and then installing it like a regular demo from the PSN store?

Thx

No. Not on OFW, if you hack the console with either CFW or HEN/HAN then you can install demos using package manager. If you was then to revert back to OFW they would still work as they only need a hack to install, not to run.

That's sad as I've played the demo on xbox 360 and just wanted to reminisce the old times

Then put HEN on your system, and install your game. Otherwise, there are purchase options usually online or at a gamestop or similar. HEN is NOT HARD TO INSTALL IF you know how to read instructions and follow them. Complete guides, etc. Big warnings about what NOT to install. Even Youtube vidoes for the mouth breathers...
if you don't like HEN, then you can remove it, and keep your little basketball game demo thing.

Try using the ps3 proxy. Spoof the URL of the PKG of another game to make it load the PKG of your demo.

I don't know if this still works or if the content id is now verified. I recall to have done this in 2008.

Anyway I recommend you to install PS3HEN or CFW if your console allows it.

AFAIK we can not do that spoof trick with a proxy anymore, back in 2008 we could just divert any package to any other one, We all used to use the Folding at home link and stuff like that to install local pkgs, but now I think all pkgs are checked against the long content ID. At least all the ones on the XMB like singstar, photo gallery, ps store, streaming apps etc are.

I assume game update pkgs are verified in the same way, or some way too but I have never checked that.

To install HEN you first need to install HFW. Your console will still be OFW but exploitable.

After you install HEN, your console will have many of the features available in a Custom Firmware, like the ability to install packages or run homebrews or backup of games.

The demo is not installed by itself, but it's quite easy to do it:
1- You put the PKG in the root of your USB drive FAT32 MBR
2- Select the PKG through the Package Manager and install it. (This is a new icon that will appear when you install HEN)
3- The game will appear on XMB.
4- You can delete PKG from the USB or reinstall it when you need it.

After installing hen, can I revert the firmware back to OFW 4.86 and not get banned when I sign into PSN to play online with the demo being installed on my HDD?

Where can I find a detailed step-by-step step guide about how to install HFW, HEN and then the PKG. Btw can you install any PKG that you want ?

Guys I need help! Hen doesn't recognize any pkg files on my usb flash drive

The file extension of the package files is case sensitive. It must be .pkg in lower case.

The pkg must be placed in the root of your USB or in the folder "packages" (also all letters in lower case)

The USB device must be formatted in FAT32 MBR. Other file system formats are not supported by the Package Manager.

If your USB device is formatted in NTFS or exFAT or if your pkg files are larger than 4GB you will need to use webMAN MOD + prepISO to detect these package files. In this case (only), the folder can be named "packages", "Packages" or "PKG".

That was the case, I actually put pkg in the root folder and it worked

I know you guys are probably annoyed by this question by now, but Will I get banned from PSN after I've installed HEN, HFW and PKG demo, and after that reverting back to OFW 4.86? I didn't log into PSN while I've played the demo, so if I try to play Tekken 6 online through PSN through the account that I run demo on, will PSN detect the demo that I installed while I play Tekken 6 and ban me? Should I remove demo altogether to avoid the ban, or should I remove it altogether just for safety?

It's safe to use PSN always that you follow these basic rules:
1- Don't login to PSN or play online games with CFW syscalls enabled.
2- Don't run any Homebrew - They are visible for all other online users (including $0ny).
3- Don't cheat or play modded games online (it's against EULA and spoils the other users experience)
4- Don't use your main PSN account to play online while using CFW (just in case your account get banned)
5- Don't use IDPS/PSID obtained from a doubtful source (probably hundreds of other users are using the same IDPS/PSID)

As you're back to OFW and you're playing a legal demo, there is nothing to be afraid.

Can a demo be modified? Is there a way to check if my demo is legal or not. I've downloaded the NBA Live 09 demo from this site

https://store.brewology.com/demos.php?letters=mnop

Btw don't I have to delete any log files? Aren't there any remaining HFW and HEN files left on a PS3 after HFW and HEN removal and reverting back to OFW?

Are there any HEN/HFW leftovers after reverting back to OFW that I have to delete manually without the need to to restore my console back to factory settings/ formatting Hard drive?
