PS3 Cannot copy PS2 save files to PS3

Hello everyone,

After years of just reading, I decided to finally join!

Here's my problem: A few days ago I found out that I can use FreeDVDBoot to access ELF file manager. So I immediately copied all my 10 year old save files to USB, as a backup. However, I haven't finished some games like GTA VCS; LCS and some COD.

To find out where PS2 saves are stored on PS3, I played the first mission in VCS and then saved. I copied that files over to my USB using the Memory Card Utility. However, these are VCS files and I just couldn't get my PSU files from my PS2 to a virtual memory card. I have a CECHB console, so I just play the games off disc, however the official MC adapter comes from Japan and therefore takes a lot of time to get here.

Is there any way to copy PSU files in a VMC? I tried renaming in to .ps2 on Pc and to then add the save files though mymc.exe, but then either said corrupted data or nothing at all.

Can someone help me? My PS2 is connected via an composite cable so HDMI over PS3 would be so much better, especially with the smooting options and the PS gold headset..

Thanks :-)

PSU is a single-save format, VMC is a virtual memory card, those are totally different.

you have some options:
- use Apollo Save Tool on PS2, and export saves as .PSV , the native PS3 format, then import those .PSV files using the XMB on PS3
- use Apollo Save tool on PS3 to convert the PSU files to .PSV, then import PSV from XMB to the virtual memcard
- use the "psv-save-converter" tool on PC, convert PSU to PSV, then import PSV on PS3

Check my github account, all these tools are there. http://github.com/bucanero

Thank you very much, I got the PS3 to detect the saves at least. But now when I want to copy the save files from the XMB to the internal memory card, it says 'An error occured during the copy operation. (81010014)'

What now?

do you have a valid .PSV file? how did you generate the PSV file?

unless it's a valid (signed and hashed) PSV file, the XMB won't import it.

Now I got it to work, the save file was actually copied over, idk why it still displayed an error code, even though it's been succesfully copied to the PS3s VMC. I'm just copying over an ISO for the PS2 disc of GTA San Andreas, as I can't create an ISO in Multiman because it always says read error.. And then I'll try in a few minutes. But the save file is now copied. Only for GTA VCS it didn't work, Apollo was always stuck at 56%. I hope that it works for GTA SA. Does Apollo sign and hash the PSV file or do I have to do that on the PS3?

yes, Apollo should sign+hash PSV files, and the XMB shouldn't be reporting errors when copying.

but again, how did you create the file? Did you use Apollo app on PS2 and export to PSV? or converted a PSU save ?

if you used Apollo PS2 app, upload the .PSV file that gives error on PS3, and also upload the PSU version from uLaunchELF of that save. I can take a look and see if there's an issue with the file.

Thank you very much! I could now convert all my saves through Apollo on PS2 and they also copy to my PS3 without any problems!

Are You sure? Why? Isn't signing is the same as PS3 fw could do it? I used in the past Your cli app for Windows and I was able normally import *.psv into *.vm1/2 from XMB.

How exactly does the MC Adapter work then? Why do saves transfer so easily over the adapter? Is there some kinda security measure?

@X7SX PS3 Memory Card Adaptor is like USB reader but for PS2 MC. It copies chosen saves with their MCFS attributes to actually mounted virtual one on PS3.

In case of saves packed to *.psv, it checks signature and filename. If invalid refuses to copy to mounted *.vm1/*.vm2. In theory, signature can be generated only by PS3 but this has been cracked and i.e Bucanero's tool making fine PSVs.

I don't see any difficulty with copying saves back and forth whatever the method. But more steps are needed in case of PSV because they are secured while PS2 MC contents aren't.

Besides that, this only sticks to PS2 emulators which using *.vm2. Those which using *.vme doesn't have official way to import saves from PSV or PS3MCA.

Hiya!
I have issues copying PS2 save files to my PS3 and would like to have assistance with whats's wrong.
I tried two methods, a website named "save-editor dot com" and the apollo save tool on my PS3
The game I am having issues with is the european platinum release of kingdom hearts for the PS2, I played it in PCSX2.
I used mymc to export the psu file from my virtual memorycart, it then gave me a psu which got accepted by both the website and the apollo save tool, the psv I got from the website error'd with code 81010014 when I tried to copy it from my USB to my virtual memory cart on my PS3, when I used the apollo save tool it did let me convert it to psv too and it worked to copy it onto my virtual mc, when I entered the game it told me that the savefile is corrupt tho so something weird is happening.
If I should provide the psu file, the psv files I get and my .ps2 memory cart from pcsx2 tell me where to send it or how I attach it and I can do so, thanks in advance!

It is also worth to mention that this only happens with this game, I used the website mentioned above first and the psv files it gave me worked for me (ratchet and clank & kingdom hearts 2)

oh my bad, it was a typo, I mean PSV files generated with Apollo are hashed and signed so importing them should *not* report any errors on XMB.

@ariebe9115 Yes, attach source VMC and exported PSU and PSV by all methods.
I didn't find an option to attach files so I uploaded it to GDrive, I am on a ps3 slim with version 4.90 and have the evilnat cfw cobra 8.4 [PEX] [CEX], I use webmanmod 1.47.32 to play PS2 games on it and have the same exact iso dump I have on my pc on my ps3
Here the drive link with the memory cart, the psu files and the psv files from apollo save tool + save-editor:

I will look into it later, but maybe You don't know: rename *.ps2 to *.vm2, place the file to vmc and rebuild database. ;]

Update on renaming the .ps2 to .vm2 and rebuilding db
It worked but it broke webmanmod, after reflashing the cfw + reinstalling the webmanmod package its working just fine tho

CFW and WMM have nothing to do with VMCs and saves entries in databases.
well, after reinitalizing the database my playstation froze everytime I tried to open a game through webmanmod, so the database rebuild sure messed it up, as I didnt know if it was a cfw or wmm issue I just reflashed both and as its working again everything's fine I guess
