I did some more testing. I deleted a few large games in a row and to my amazement, the space wasn't immediately freed. Instead I could watch the free space counter slowly climb from 384 GB free to 401 GB free over the course of ~1 minute. In that time I was browsing around /dev/hdd0 in MM's file manager. I also confirmed that XMB's idea of free space matches MM's now.
Still not sure if it's just the display that updates slowly or if it's the actual free space reported by the file system. But the trick works reliably and I'll never shut down the console again right after deleting something
