PS3 CECHA00 - Questions about black screen in PS2

Hello,
Recently I've bought a Japanese CECHA00. When I got it, I saw that it came with FW 3.5x, before doing anything I played a little bit with it (with NTSC-J titles, PSX, PS2 and PS3) but the PS2 did not work, the console recognizes the disc but after you start playing it the screen remains black but you can hit the PS button on the controller and the XMB would fire up.

I've been searching about this, dead EE/GS, faulty RSX, etc. So I've decided to first, try to play a CD and a DVD movie, they did work. So after that, I installed Evilnat 4.90 CEX and WEBMANMOD all worked great. So I decided to play a little more but only ps3 games, the CPU temps are always below 70ºC (158ºF) and the RSX doesn't get too hot, the maximum was 65ºC (149ºF). I don't really know if this info of webmanmod is true but it says that the console has been used for only 44 days.

Even with such good temps, I decided to open it up, clean it (it was almost dust free, it feels like a new model) and change it the thermal paste with a Noctua NT-H2. With that, the temps where almost 60ºC (140ºF) and 55ºC (122ºF), CPU and RSX respectively. But the ps2 games still no working... So I decided to play "The Last of Us" for a while 1-2h, fan speed at 40% and the temps where 68ºC (154.4ºF) and 60ºC (140ºF) maximum, CPU and RSX respectively, and it did a pretty good work.

Now let me write about the ps2, but I've tried:
  • Put all enhancements of the ps2 mode off.
  • Using exclusively components.
  • Games regions: NTSC-J and PAL.
  • Tried to use another TV.
    • With an old monitor (HDMI) that I had laying around, the monitor showed me a message saying: "invalid resolution" (and the info output said that it was trying to output 480p, but maybe was it 480i?). This was with all the enhancements off, if I enabled them, the output info was 1080p and the black screen.
  • Playing backups from WEBMANMOD but NTSC and PAL, should I try NTSC-J too?
Guess I don't really know what else I can try, now I'm looking for an old PLASMA TV that's HD READY where the 1080i and 480i are available. Or even a CRT and try to see if the ps2 mode really works...

Thanks in advance and thanks for reading all the stuff.

Ive had this issue previously on cok001 boards only, I've also seen others with this issue and I haven't seen or found an answer, but next time I come across a A00 or B00 I will trace the this issue and swap the EE chip from another board, as this is a reoccurring issue on here and I'd like to find a solution

So you're telling me that I would need to replace the EE/GS chip from the PS3 with another one and check if it works? It does have to be from donor then...

While I look after a chip like that, do you think that is there anything else to test? I'm willing to do more testing with the console, maybe even the syscon could tell anything else?

It seems to be that it might be the technical problem with your console, unfortunately. Did you try to run PS2 games, switching from ps2_emu.self configuration (responsible for running EE+GS chip) to ps2_netemu.self configuration (responsible for enabling full software emulation) and see if your PS2 games are booting up?

Yes, right now I'm testing some ps2 backups forcing ps2_netemu.self.
I've tested around 4-5 PAL and NTSC games, this is the summary (Had to check the compatibility chart):
  • "xxx.bin.enc"
    • The ones I've tested, were 100% compatible. So they boot and I could play a little bit.
  • "xxx.iso"
    • Almost all worked (compatibility chart).
I've got a question, if I have physical ps2 games, how can I run them with webmanmod? I've tried with the "play disc" option from the web, but it just tries to start it up without using ps2_netemu.self.

But to mantain the CELL below 70ºC (158ºF) I had to increase the fan to 33%. RSX doesn't hit 55ºC (131ºF).

A little update:

I've found an old TV which can handle 480i, so I put the components on and tried some games, saddly, none of them worked (physical ps2 games, PAL and NTSC-J).

I've made a little vídeo of what it does, seems like it tries to load something, some artifacts show up and that's all, black screen (saddly I don't know where's the controller so I don't have the option to check more info of the output):

New update:

I've been searching for a EE+GS chip, while I did it, I've found some interesting links about this, I'll try to explain them here:

The PS2 and PS3 (even PSX but only devs kits) share the same EE+GS chip, as found here:
https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps2/EE+GS

With this info, I've tried to find a datasheet or something to get which PS2 and PSX (For now, those devs kits, are very rare and I don't want to break them just for the chip), so I've found these one:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17eE3OyWHHsft1mQA3DmUfcsSiRp_iRbtm_2d8B16WKc/edit#gid=0

Very interesting, because searching the following combination from PSDEVWIKI, for the ps3 you'll need a specific EE+GS CHIP:
  • GS 1.13 + EE 4.2: CXD2953AGB
  • GS 1.12 + EE 4.2: CXD9833GB
  • MAYBE EVEN
    • GS 1.12 + EE 4.2: CXD9797GB
I'm trying to get exactly which PS2 models do have this EE+GS chip. So, using PSDEVWIKI (the photos of the PS2 motherboards) and the datasheet from Google Drive, the models are:
  • SCPH-77006
  • SCPH-77008
  • SCPH-77004
  • SCPH-70011
  • SCPH-70012
  • SCPH-75001
  • SCPH-75008
  • SCPH-70005

So I'm trying to find one of these PS2 just to get the chip from and do swap. So I'll have to wait until I decide which model to buy, buy it, wait for it to arrive, test the ps2 (to check if it works) and then swap the chips.

If any of you have more questions or such, I'll be here.

UPD2: Added image and removed duplicated registers of the ps2 models

If you want a EE chip I can remove one from a cok001 board if you pay postage

I've bought a PS2 SCPH-77004 from my same country for few bucks, so by the end of the week I sould have it and can try to swap them. If it fails... Then I can try with another chip I guess, so thanks for the offer, but let me try with the PS2 first.

No problem and good luck I'd be very interested in your results when you test

New sadly update:

Ebay's buyer just sent me a refund because yes, no explanations:

I'll try to contact the seller if there's no luck, I'll try and buy the chip from @Supermaripro , I'm gonna send you a PM just to check how much for the shipping costs.

And to clarify, it says faulty beacuse the console doesn't read any game, but I don't care I have a FMCB prepared for it, but now I'll have to wait more time... What a shame.

Sent you a PM
Saw it, but wanted to contact the seller first.

So I've called the store today. The reason why the order was cancelled was because inside the console there were roaches, or that's what the seller told me... The PS2 is gone, it's has been throwed to the garbage a long time ago (last week).

But the seller told me to send him a list with the specific models I needed and see if he has one one this.

Anyway, let me just buy the chip from you, I've spent a lot of time for nothing.

The issue is might also be related to the RSX rather than the EE+GS, as some lines are connected to the RSX for post processing, which is used when smoothing/upscaling or Motion Adaptive deinterlace are enabled, otherwise the RSX is used as passthrough for video signals, this means that if some balls or bumps on the RSX that are connected to EE+GS are cracked, ps2emu will fail to load.

So should I try and do a reballing for the RSX?
I'll try to swap the EE+GS chip first and then I'll go and check the RSX chip.

Okay, I got the board COK-001 from @Supermaripro .
This weekend I'll try and do the swap. Anyways, if it still not working, I'll try and do a reballing to the RSX as @mathieulh told me.
I'll try to update the thread whenever I can, and hopefully I will come with a solution or a new problem... We'll see.

Before you dive into replacing or reballing the EE or rsx try swap the smaller CXD9208 IC from the board I sent you as that is smaller and has solved the ps2 issue previously
