Got this model recently very cheap, it came with a broken BD drive which i was able to fix by putting a newer PS3 BD drive version (BD-410) with remarrying. I tested PS2 games both orginal and backups and it worked but after i changed the HDD to a SSD it stopped recognizing backups as "ps2 format discs" (orginal PS2 discs still work) and now they only appear as "data discs" in video tab on XMB. Is this a firmware issue or bug on CFW? Or something else?

Sorry to hear about these problems! Perhaps installing Managunz as well might help. The following video says that PS1 games are in CUE and BIN format, but PS2, PS3 and PSP games are in ISO format, so I don't know why a bug can affect only PS2 disc backups, which should be ISO, but I'd like to hear more about this issue. I haven't yet played any PS2 games as this requires non standard firmware on my PS3 Fat CECHG03, which I haven't yet installed.

I only bought a PS3 less than two weeks ago, but I'm not getting many replies to my posts on here and one post has been moved to a PS4 forum where I posted before deciding to buy a PS3.

I'm very impressed to read that you've actually managed to replace the BD drive AND the HDD. My HDD is only 40Gb, so it looks like I need to replace it with an SSD, use an SSD externally, or even USB sticks, but I don't understand much about the PS3 yet. I've downloaded some demos from the Playstation Store which won't play. When I try to run them, it just says "Installing..." (again), with estimated times of 30-40 minutes, or longer! I've read that the internal WiFi receiver is very slow, but I haven't tried using an external USB WiFi adapter yet. My 5G WiFi hub only has a USB-C port, so I can't connect using Ethernet.

So it is a SSD issue, I'm surprised that it only affects burned games and not orginal discs. Either way i was planning to play PS2 games from internal storage anyway to not wear down the laser on the BD drive but still this is a really weird issue.

Thanks for the reply.

It's not a big deal since it doesn't break PS2 backwards compatibility, i was mostly curious as to why swapping to SSD causes this issue.

Regarding your problem, did you managed to install them? If you did download them and now you're stuck at the installing screen then it could be that your HDD is going bad which happens with these old HDDs.

I doubt this is your issue but i had a problem similar to you as well when i got this model, when i tried to enter any game or homebrew it would get stuck on a black screen forcing me to force shutdown the PS3 manually and then turns out it was the faulty disc drive causing it, PS3 seems to check the disc drive's status before allowing you to start an application, i installed no BD ver of CFW temporally and got passed it and then eventually swapped the old BD-400 disc drive with a more reliable version that came with newer fats BD-410 and got disc functionality back and no more black screen on regular CFW firmware.
