About a month ago I bought a launch CECHB01 that had been taken apart to "replace" thermal paste. When plugged in, the console started up but did not display any video. I replaced paste with high quality stuff left from my last PC build, and thoroughly cleaned every part of the console, including the laser in the Blu-ray drive which was... dirty to say the least. After reassembly, I was able to see video and everything works normally (PS1, PS2, DVD, and some early PS3 games still function normally) except for a few PS3 games which required newer firmware past 3.41. Does not recognize regular or 3D Blu-ray Discs either.
The original 20gb HDD was in the console, and is on firmware 3.41. I have tried updating the firmware first from Sony's website, then using older OFW, but every time I try to update the firmware with anything (even after multiple tries with the same OFW) I am given the message that the file is corrupted. I've gone into service mode and tried each of the six options but the problem persists. It asks for firmware 3.56 or newer each time.
Is there a particular order to update the firmware? To be clear, I do NOT want custom firmware since I don't intend to do any jailbreaking. This is also the first PS3 I've owned, so I'm not familiar with hardly anything I've read about cfw vs ofw, rebug, etc. I am a beginner lol. Additionally, I do not plan on using the console online at all. I simply want a backwards compatible PS3 that can play PS1-PS3 and Blu-ray Discs without incident. Any help is appreciated!
