PS3 CECHC03 locks up on black screen when booting PS2 games.

I picked up a CECHC03 model about a month ago for a very good price. But haven't had time to work on the issues it has.

It boots PS3 games without issue but has issues with PS2 games. It seems to freeze on the black screen before the PS2 chip starts after opening the game from the PS3 menu. Although on rare occasions it will boot PS2 games. I have been using compatible DVD and CD PS2 games for this model.

I have replaced the laser in the disc drive and even replaced the whole drive with a known working one (keeping the original drive board). I have reset the system multiple times via safe mode and tried a new HDD. It has been suggested to me to try JB and see if PS2 ISOs have any issues booting but I haven't had the time to do this yet.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what the issue is and how I could fix it or any tips for figuring out the cause of the issue?
I can provide a video if it helps.

Thanks

I had this issue and resetting the system didn't work but restoring default settings did. So try restore default settings and see if this fixes the issue first

Thanks for your response. I have tried this but with no success. After this try, I went through all Restore options in safe mode and set up the console. This time I put a game in and the PS2 logo showed but it didn't boot the game after disappearing. The console was still active as I could still access the PS menu. After quitting, the console crashed while fading out of the PS menu. I power cycled and tried another game and the console failed to start again as originally described. The console is on the latest original firmware from Sony after restoring from USB a few tests back. I am still yet to JB/CFW and try an ISO.

You need to read the syscon for the last error where the console crashed. Because you console boots you can obtain the syscon by installing Custom firmware and installing the package file PS3 tools. Now select dump syscon and have a USB stick inserted in the USB drive formatted to fat32. Now insert the USB into your laptop or PC and open the text file, you will now see the syscon dump. Copy and paste it to this thread and we can see if your console has a system failure that could be preventing PS2 games to boot
