PS3 CECHC03 shuts down after around 15 - 20 seconds with black screen.

Hi there,
I purchased a PS3 (CECHC03) that was listed as spares as it had no HDD. Once it arrived I installed a spare HDD from another broken PS3. The console boots for around 20 seconds with a black screen and then turns off, no YLOD nor flashing lights, solid red. It only stays on in safe mode, it won't format the HDD as when it resets to initialise the format it just turns off and it won't update past 4% and gives an error code. It is asking for update 3.40 or over. Is there any way of salvaging it?

I have reformatted the HDD using my laptop, which the PS3 formatted (which it hasn't been able to do), then proceeded to attempt to update but still only got to 4% and gave the same error code.
