Hello,
Recently i got my hands on slightly used PS3 model CECHM03, it is a late model FAT PS3 with VER-001 board. It had the Sony seal still on it and no dust at all. It has latest Evilnat CFW on it. I can say it had little use in its time.
The temps are really bad though. I mean it has 80C RSX temp at idle with SYSCON. With CFW fan curve at 33% it has around 60+. So i opened it and removed all IHS both from RSX and CELL. CELL IHS removal is very easy for me whereas RSX is not. Especially this one has almoast no room between the IHS and the ramchips of RSX. But i managed...
Two things happened:
1) I only had significant gain temps over the CPU whereas the original inside thermal paste was bad and all the other thermal paste (outside white ones and RSX inside thermal paste) were still good, therefore i had no significant heat reduction in RSX. But i got the CPU running like 10C lower than it used to be. So currently everything is repasted (Artic MX-5) but the machine is still running hot meaning that needs more than 40% fan to keep it under 65 (RSX) while gaming. Now i have it with the 75C profile so most of the times it runs at about 33% fan speed. It is really strange..i could say the the default cooling system is pure BS, which is..Sony released a product idling at 80C, note it is a late model FAT with 65nm RSX/CELL inside.
2) After the removal of the IHS of RSX i have this weird issue. When you open the machine it practically GLODs. It shows nothing on the screen. You can either close it by holding the power button or with the power switch at the back. What i noticed is this. If you wait like 3 minutes (to heat up a little) and then close it, next time (seconds later) it opens without any issue. If you let it cool it has to pass though the same procedure. You can open and close it normally while it is warmed up (like 60C) though. I have no further issues while gaming e.t.c. There is no visual damage on the board or the ICs.
So please let me know your thoughts, thank you.
