PS3 CFW update noob question

I originally had REBUG4.84.2 converted to DEX. I want to update to the latest CFW. I think it's now 4.86.1 REBUG LITE EDITION. Do I need to convert back to CEX before installing the latest firmware?

Yes, Rebug Lite editions are CEX only.
Use the Rebug Toolbox to switch to CEX mode, the ps3 will reboot then you can install Rebug Lite 4.86.
