PS3HEN [COINCIDENCE] Able to make HEN [auto] installer fail reproducable

Hello PS3Xploit team,

I can reproduce that the HEN [2.2.2] [auto] installer fails, while the USB installation method always works.

Steps to reproduce:
#1 Get rid of all HEN/HAN/Homebrew files to get back to clean OFW/HFW state
  • (not necessary for reproduction) Deinstall all homebrew except for File/Backup Manager IrisMan and SEN Enabler.
  • Start File/Backup Manager "Game > IrisMan" to clean-up HEN/HAN/Homebrew related directories and files.
    • The following list contains the typical candidates for vanilla installations with just File/Backup Manager IrisMan installed.
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/BDISO
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/DVDISO
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/GAMES
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/GAMEZ
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/PKG
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/PKGTMP
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/PS2ISO
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/PS3ISO
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/PSPISO
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/PSXISO
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/ROMS
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/exdata
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/game/XMBMANPLS (HAN? CFW left-over?)
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/hen
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/packages
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/plugins
      • Remove directory /dev_hdd0/xmlhost
      • Remove file /dev_hdd0/boot_plugins.txt
      • Remove file /dev_hdd0/Latest_HEN_installer*.pkg
      • Remove file /dev_hdd0/theme/PS3HEN.p3t
      • Clear directory /dev_hdd0/tmp
    • Still files from these and other homebrew could be left behind in several other places. What are the typical locations to clear or remove?
  • Exit File/Backup Manager.
  • (not necessary for reproduction) Delete File/Backup Manager "Game > IrisMan" via "Triangle > Delete".
  • Start "Game > SEN Enabler" to remove execution history via "Delete history files" (include HomeBrew calls, e.g. IrisMan).
  • Exit SEN Enabler.
  • (not necessary for reproduction) Delete "Game > SEN Enabler" via "Triangle > Delete".
  • "Update" to HFW via "Settings > System Update" or Recovery Mode.
#2 Try to reinstall PS3HEN
After reboot into HFW when trying to reinstall PS3HEN via the HEN [auto] installer, then enabling HEN will fail.
Reboots do not fix this issue.
Using the USB installation method at http://**ps3xploit.com >Domain no Longer owned by team** (ps3xploit.me =new)/hen/enabler/usb/ works immediately.

Regards

The installer checks for the HEN enabler icon in flash, the full installer pkg is only downloaded and installed if it isn't found. If it is found, HEN is enabled and nothing else. I guess this is what you mean when you say that it fails. It's not an issue, that's just the way it was designed.

If you want to fresh/re-install HEN without a USB, use http://xmbmods.co/i instead.

Shouldn't the HEN enabler icon be overwritten in flash when I re-install HFW/OFW?
HEN enabler icon is png icons folder not a gim inside rco and when you install a PUP dev_flash will be earsed so all the files that was there will be deleted and files inside PUP update will be extracted there

It fails when enabling HEN itself. Not downloading the installer package seems to be a follow-up failure.
  • Visit exploit home page via Internet Browser.
  • Web page says "Downloading HEN...".
  • PS3 downloads PS3HEN.p3t (*.bin).
  • Press "Circle" to go back.
  • Web page says "Enabling HEN...".
  • No message appears and Browser asks to close.
Expected behaviour would have been:
  • Message appears "Welcome to HEN 2.2.2".
  • Browser closes.
  • PS3 downloads "Latest_HEN_installer_signed.pkg".
  • Press "Circle" to go back.
  • PS3 installs "Latest_HEN_installer_signed.pkg".
  • Reboot PS3.
Due to the hint with the icon I tested with also cleaning up the following:
  • Remove directory /dev_rewrite/hen
  • Remove files /dev_rewrite/vsh/resource/explore/icon/hen_*
And then the HEN [2.2.2] [auto] installer works again immediately after reverting back to HFW.
Unfortunately this also means that reverting back to HFW does not overwrite /dev_rewrite and leaves files behind :(

Unfortunately, enabling HEN online will never work consistently (in its current state), even when the initial ROP exploit initializes successfully. Because of this, I wrote the second xmbmods installer with the help of @DeViL303 which appears to work fine for the majority of the people that have used it. Honestly, I'd recommend using it instead of the main one, unless we can improve it in the future.

Thanks for explanation. I retested again yesterday and 29/30 attempts worked flawlessly.
Seems it really was a coincidence - weird.
DeViL303 also helped to verify that indeed the flash is cleared and filled anew when a full firmware is flashed.
Sorry for the noise.

i say to you that time when you ask about how to clean ps3 system i say that when you update with hfw dev_flash will be erased and install new files

@Louay I know. That was also what I knew. But my tests let me doubt, with an injected XMB File Explorer we just verified, that this was also the case with my console.

All input was much appreciated. If it sounded to you differently, then please accept my apology.

Might wanna check with @DeViL303 on giving out his site. It has the latest betas that aren't meant for public use yet bud
