Controller not working in main menu

Just did a disc swap unirom boot disc install of freepsxboot to memory card. Everything seemed to work fine but now I am unable to move the cursor or select anything on the main menu. When I load a game the controller works fine and it worked during the install of the memory card so I am totally confused about why it wouldnt work on the main menu. Anyone ever ran into this issue?

I should also add it is a Old Skool brand non analog controller so I dont have analog button on there to mess it up in the main menu. And my ps1 model is scph 5501

Hey Bud, did you ever find a solution to this? I have the exact same setup as you including the "old skool" controller and having the EXACT same issue. One thing i noticed though, i tried a blank memory card, and ment to the main menu, and I still couldn't navigate to select anything at all. I'm wondering if its this "old skool" aftermarket controller we are using and it not being recognized to use in the main menu; but playing normal games, the controller works fine.

It is 100% the controller. I don't know the cause of it but I got my hands on an actual ps1 oem controller and everything worked fine. Im guessing it reads the old skool controller as a dualshock controller with analog on or something
