PS3 Discussion for Supporting > 1TB HDD/SSD on PS3 using Multiple Partitions

Hello everyone!

I was wondering if there have been any efforts in trying to support greater than 1TB HDD/SSD on a PS3 using multiple partitions.

A PS3 formatted hard drive uses MBR which is limited to about ~2.199TB. Although a PS3 can technically support 2TB, in reality it has instability above 1TB.

Is it possible to create 2 partitions on a 2TB drive, 1TB for the OS, and 1TB for storing games? The second partition could be mounted to some folder like `/dev_hdd1` and just include folders such as `BDISO`, `DVDISO`, `GAMES`, `PS2ISO`, `PS3ISO`, `PSPISO`, `PSXISO`, `ROMS`. This partition would operate just like an external USB drive but with improved read speeds.

Well you could use Debian (I think) it supports PowerPC and should work on the PS3 yes just use a thumb drive to setup it or use their installer but it needs to be 64 bit the installer is recommended but if you are advanced user you can use their debootstrap for that.
Or just use it to shrink the ps3 main which is possible but the ps3 won't read it

PS3 not using MBR but custom format, plus it using multiple partitions... Its maximum size is at minimum 8EiB, in theory maximum is few ZiB. The 1TiB limit is some hardcoded cap buried, somewhere, no one knows where.

Is it possible to mirror the hdd out to usb as if it where the real hdd? that way you could play ps2 games off usb on later ps3s without the ps2 hardware.

1tb is the best bet. Multipartition on internall hdd is not possible. Get the games what you play on internal and be happy you dont need crap that you will never play there.

Sorry but you know what i meant. multipartition to use more than 2tb.

That's also possible. We tried that too (added partition after last one). And tests proves that issue lies in fw somewhere. No high level bypass based is possible due to disk size cap. There are few hypothetically possible way to achieve that, but all failed, all tested. We need reverse that part to figure out what's going on. But how many REs are still on PS3 scene? Bguerville, Esc0rtd3w, Habib, Evilnat, Zecoxao? All involved in different stuff.
