Do I need to update my CFW

Please accept my nievity and general lack of all things CFW, but Im reading about all these updates and getting a little confused
Im not 100% sure what CFW my PS3 slim is running, I paid a chap to have it "Modified", but the XMB Screen boots up with REBUG displayed and It has several applications installed but I really only use IRISMAN or Retroarch to play games.
Firstly is REBUG, the actual custom firmware that runs the PS3 rather than the Sony Firmware, and Irisiman and Retroarch are justy applications within that firmware.
Assuming REBUG is my firmware, and reading all the latest posts about the SONY update, and the following REBUG update, DO I NEED TO UPDATE MY PS3's firmware...to the new updated Rebug ?

This is purely your choice, bud.
If you play online, you need the latest firmware (or a firmware spoofer like PSNpatch).

But apart from that, I don't think there's any real need.
One thing you can do though, is update the apps you use to gain any new features that may have been implemented since your "guy" modified your console.

These can be found here in our resource section, or at their respective Github Web pages.

So you are total noob? Might be worth having a little browse around the forums at some infos and tutorials. Get yourself better acquainted with how things work with the ps3 and CFW.
REBUG is just one many different CFW. It has some features others don't. One feature it does is convert your console from a CEX (retail) to DEX (developer) unit.
Now, while in this DEX mode, some things can potentially damage the console. Like (and don't quote me on this... I can't find anything to back up my claim.... But Im sure I've read) updating the console while in DEX.

So.... If I'm right about this. And your on DEX (it's a possibility your "guy" might have done this) then updating might be a bad idea. To check. If you have REBUGToolbox under Games on xmb, open it and browse the menus, can't remember the specific one, but it will show whether you are on CEX or DEX.

I've definitely written a bit of an essay here. But it's nothing compared to the wealth of knowledge sprawled accross our halls, here at Psx-place. I urge you to take a browse and absorb a little info before you crack on with anything.
