PS3 Do NOT play the following games online if you don't want a ban!

First of all, please note that it's never 100% to play any game online on a modded PS3, however in the overwhelming majority of cases people got banned not for just playing online on a modded system but rather due to using game mods (i.e. cheating) online or attempting to sync hacked trophies. As long as you disable syscalls / unload HEN and play legitimately then PSN is relatively safe, although as said before, it can never be completely safe.

Having said that, there are a few exceptions to that rule. The following list of games are notorious for actively scanning your PS3 for popular homebrew content and reporting it to PSN if found, triggering a ban as soon as you click the online option in the game's main menu.
As such you must never play the following games online on a modded system, even with syscalls disabled / HEN unloaded:
  • CoD - BO2 and any later title in the series. Earlier titles should be safe. Use Wikipedia if you're not sure about the order of release of CoD games.
  • Destiny.
  • GTA V - No longer relevant because the PS3 online service has been shut down.

BO2 specifically has an "Antiban EBOOT", which is a modified executable that has the aforementioned checks removed. Please note that it's a 3rd party hack and using it means trusting that whoever created it did a proper job. I've never used it myself so I cannot say anything about its safety from my own experience. Also I'm not sure whether the game has received any patches after the EBOOT has been released, which may affect its effectiveness. If you try it feel free to post your results, but mind that if the creator did not do a proper job, this may result in both your console being banned and your account being completely closed.
All other titles in the list don't have antiban EBOOTs available and really the only safe way of playing them is to keep a second, unmodded, PS3 just for online play. 2nd hand PS3s these days cost less than $100 so it's not that bad of a deal. The only other alternative would be to remove any evidence of homebrew ever having been installed on your console, which involves reflashing OFW (or DB) and reformatting the HDD.

It should also be noted that this only applies to online play. Offline (single player) mode is safe as long as you're not logged in to PSN while playing (except for Destiny, which has no offline mode).

I've played Ghosts and AW before and I never had any problems, I even played with a DS4 using PS3xPAD. I'm not saying it's safe but I'm still not banned :D

Is Battlefield 3 fine to play? the servers are going down later this year and I wanted to try it before that
