PS3 Don't use Youtube as main/only source of info for Jailbreaking

Hi eveyone Modern Vintage Gamer/lantus360 here. For those that don't know me I am a homebrew dev started out on the OG Xbox and moved to the 360 and did some PS3 homebrew stuff for a minute - I ported FBANext back in 2011, and then Squarepusher took it over and was the beginning on RetroArch.

These days I run a YouTube channel and wanted to clear up a few things about MrMario's video and YT in general.

30000 views is probably about 30 dollars in ad-revenue. So anyone who claims its for the views/money has no idea what they are talking about. Most YouTubers make less than the poverty line. Only the top 5% get rich. Getting a little extra on the side is nice, but saying that he is doing it for the views/ad revenue has no idea what they are talking about

Now lets take that 30 dollars and think about how much time that was taken to research, film, edit the video. It probably took him between 12-24 hours of his time to make. All of a sudden that $30 doesn't seem worth the trouble does it? Even minimum wage would pay out way more than $30.

So why do it then? We do this stuff because we are passionate about the scene's we are a part of and want to spread knowledge. His video - while could have used some adjustments - is totally fine. Everyone should know the risks doing this stuff.

And anyone who uses a YouTube video as a main guide and NOT as a supplement while working on a text base guide really has no business attempting to perform a jailbreak.

I've done tutes on YT myself (PSVita TV JB, Xbox Softmodding etc) and some of it is out of date now.

YouTube isnt always the best medium for tutorials because you cant easily modify content. Anyway I wanted to say ive used MrMario's tutorials before and they've always been top quality and I vouch for him

in this instance there was nothing inherently wrong with his guide, but there were some checks and balances that were missed.

thanks

MVG/lantus

Off topic but great to see you here, i still use your OG XBOX emu's from time to time. Thanks for the tools, vids and the dope tunes you produce!

don't want no1 in my place no god damn ps3 I spent money in that cost me 125 pounds bro all that gone to waste andwasted 29 mins watching a yt video with an arsehole
I remember MrMario's old tutorial from when I jailbroke my PS3 using PS3Xploit v1.0 - the original release from late 2017. I knew nothing about PS3 jailbreaking until my mate told me about how it was possible. So I did a search for something like "ps3 jailbreak" and found both this forum as well as his YT video. I did watch the video, but I also checked here (links were also in the description, if I recall) and used the written guide here as it had all the steps written down so I could refer to them, and then double and triple check before I went ahead.

This was v1.0 of the exploit, before it was made easier to use, and yet I still managed because I wanted the original source of information itself - right here. Nothing wrong with using a video tutorial to complement a written one, if for nothing else than a visual reference which helps give a feel for the processes involved with jailbreaking the PS3.

how much in pounds GBP Is a decent E3 Flasher and check out ArchieG on YT tell me how good his tuts are
You should be able to get one for about £30 approx.

Less with slow free shipping from Hong Kong, here is one on ebay uk.

Maybe you should have spent that time reading the tutorial posted on this forum.

In the end, it's your fault for following a bad tutorial on YouTube. Simple enough.

Yes you had a corrupt hex file, but you should have read the post here, at the source, and also followed the on-screen instructions on exploit page.

I am sorry you had a bad experience using our tools.

I feel for you man, we hate to see bricks. It's the reason we test everything so much and post the steps that we feel are the correct ones, for a smooth experience.

Your PS3 is repairable with hardware flasher at the end of the day.

I would never recommend, to anyone, using a YouTube video as a primary source of information for something like hacking a console. I would strongly recommend to anyone to read the information posted here and/or on **ps3xploit.com >Domain no Longer owned by team** (ps3xploit.me =new). The written guide is hardly War and Peace, and it gives all of the relevant information in a concise and clear manner - no ambiguity, no missing steps, no nonsense.

thanks @DeViL303 but aint it rubbish cos it Chinese model
They are all chinese. I dont know of any "well made German" E3 flashers or anything like that. They could all be fakes too these days, idk, not much difference in real and fake anyway really, they all dont have the best quality control, you just got to chance it, they normally work a bit anyway.

Absolutely I would. I've inadvertently given incorrect information on this forum in the past, and have admitted and apologised for doing so in every instance of that - although I haven't made a habit of it. You say that, yet you've yet to admit that you made a mistake.

You chose to take a YouTube video at face value, without considering the consequences. You chose not to follow up that half hour video with a little research of your own - links are in the description, anyway - and as a direct result of your negligence you ended up with a bricked console. I cannot see how you can blame a YouTuber for your own behaviour; you need to accept that you made a mistake, and one you can absolutely learn from in the future.

This thread is not here to bash mrmario, he did not mean to make a mistake, he did try, he just should have researched a little more. Like if he read 5 pages of xploit threads comments even he would have known about all these checks, he obviously just did not do much research, but he owes us nothing, its better than some other tutorials, and there are tonnes of fake jailbreak tutorials too. So really is 50/50 blame imo, you should not have relied on 1 source of info.
