External drive Q

Just got a 1TB Touro Mobile external HDD which i'm planning to use on my console, taking out the 1TB internal HDD (which i'm gonna use on the pc) and using a 300GB hdd as internal. Never ever before i have used an external drive on my console because i didn't need to, but i've been told (by many, many people) that using an external drive for the games is MUCH faster than using the internal HDD (which makes sense since the internal hdd has to source the ISO, the installed game data AND the HDD1 partition for caching).

Now the questions are:

1) What should i do? use the ext hdd with asingle NTFS partition, a single fat32 partition or should i repartition the hdd to have 1 of each?

I'm asking since, apparently, PREPNTFS can only access ISOs and i also have several JB format games.

2) Is it true that i have to run PREPNTFS EVERY DAMN TIME I want to run an ISO from a NTFS partition?

that using an external drive for the games is MUCH faster than using the internal HDD
Ps3's 2x blu-ray drive read at a constant 9 MB/s so you can be disappointed on speed improvement. Just in most cases additional read speed will be not noticeable. But some rare titles can work better (like GTA style games). And tbh i prefer one big internal HDD than your solution.

You also lose on games that read more from BD, because usb is 22MB/s Internal is ~150MB/s so fictional blu ray will be faster when internal.

Your decision, ntfs is ISO only drive. FAT32 have rare problems in some games. Like Gran turismo 6 loading times (3-4x slower than from internal). But fat drive give you simple access to install pkgs, updates, and will be visible in XMB (for movies, music, photos, etc).

No, you need to run it to list games. Adding game = run prepntfs Playing game = No need to run prepntfs. Also think about IRISMAN, iirc it has native ntfs support.

As always... Spot on advice from master kozarovv...

Ntfs support with webMAN-MOD is good via prepNTFS. You normally only need to run it once to "register" your disc then even a refresh xml should work without having to run prepNTFS again even though in practice it's just as easy to use prepNTFS to rebuild the game list as it calls Refresh XML anyway.

As previously mentioned the irisman forks have the best ntfs support all round, better than mmCM which seems to have problems dealing with some types of usb controllers. .

Using NTFS is also synonymous with running Cobra... Or Mamba..
Unfortunately, multi partitioning often leads to problems so if you need to run a handful of games in JB format, you can use the internal hdd or even a usb key in fat32
That's what I do, ntfs for my iso & a 64gb key in fat32 for everything else...

I still haven't had time to mess around with this thing, mainly because of my fear of losing my profile. Is there a way to backup my profiles and saves without using the backup utility?

Edit: I do know how to backup the folders, but have never tried to restore them after an HDD change. I have the feeling it won't work quite as I expected.

As you are reducing the size you cannot clone the hdd.

Folders can be backed up via ftp (ethernet is better than wifi of course) or with a file manager like Irisman or mmOS.
Everything you want to backup is on /dev_hdd0.

So you could try to copy your hdd saves & profiles but personally I would use the backup utility because it's reliable & simple. It does exactly what you want...

K, I'll delete everything but saves and profiles then
Sure you could do your house cleaning before using the backup utility... Keep only what you need to backup.
Remember you need to sync the trophies with psn to restore them after hdd upgrade. It's the thing that cannot yet be backed up.
It should be painless using psnpatch. I do it often....

Already backed up the trophies, because I have already lost them a while ago...
Extra info :
To back up trophies the only PSN situation that can be tricky is the system activation.
For some reason I have had the nasty surprise to loose device activation (basically the registration of your PS3 with your psn account) which in turn restricts psn access if not done.
It's normal maybe because I mess with my PS3 a lot, testing and use many cfw so....
But still it can happen & sometimes it's impossible to reactivate easily until a new cfw comes out. I had problems also due to version spoofing which lead to activation failure.
If ever it happened to you & it stopped you from syncing again (you probably won't have the problem but if you do) don't despair. Be patient at some point you'll manage..
There's also the ps3 system activation feature on the playstation psn website. You can activate ps3 & psp there. Worth a try.

Hope it helps... [emoji5]️

Okay, so i have deleted EVERYTHING in the HDD, only leaving some emulators (between all of them its something like 50 MB or so), and the HDD is having only 660 gbs free, the backup utility is reporting a 6 hour long process. What the actual F%$# is wrong here??? It's just 2 profiles, saves and the emulators, no ROMs, no games, no apps, no nothing!!!

Can I manipulate the actual backup later on the PC? I have a feeling the backup will not fit in the 300gb HDD

Can you try to find where the folder that takes all this space is? Check folder properties with mmOS in /dev_hdd0 for example like you would with a pc...
Maybe there are some undeleted useless cached files taking all that space...

You could also check your filesystem for errors who knows, you can call the check with wMM.

You might want to backup your saves to usb independently directly in the Game Saves data section btw.

I have manually deleted all the info on the hdd, the backup is 174GB. I'll look into HDD error checking tomorrow

What's the total space & free space on internal hdd?
If the backup is 174gb, something has not been deleted..
Did you check folders size, including profile folder size?.....

That's what I already suggested in post #12.. [emoji6]
Everything is obviously not deleted!

Turns out i'm a fucking idiot and forgot to delete the GAMES folder, which in turn is good since ftp connection crapped out while transferring the JB folders to the pc (number of files might be a factor here), Currently converting all the JB games to ISO with multiman to be later transferred to the pc and FUCKING END THIS BULLSHIT ONCE AND FOR ALL

forgot to delete the GAMES folder

seriously, after the (now i know failed) transfer i thought i deleted the folder contents, but it seems i didn't. still converting to iso in the console and transferring to the pc....

Sometimes it happens, best way is to copy thru ftp. And then copy again with option to ignore files with same size (filezilla). This way you are 100% sure that all is ok after copying. And don't lose time to checking everything, because files with same size on ps3 and pc will be ignored because they are already ok.
