PS3 External Hdd issues

I had old exhdd used it for 10 years and it was working fine with 0 bad sectors before I stared using it with my ps3. After 2 months of using it on ps3 it went bad and full of bad sectors so I thought it's because it was old but now I got a new one and noticed that the ps3 just cuts the power off it without safe ejection when it's plugged for a along time without using it or when I turn off the ps3 so is this a normal behavior I don't want to kill the new hdd

Afaik, that's normal behavior. I think the PS4 and 5 are the same way, because the activity light shuts off in rest mode, while the 360 up to the series x always send power to an external HDD, even in standby, so the activity light is always flashing. That might be why it takes so long to scan external hdds on the PS4 and 5, when the power is abruptly cut. Another thing is an hdd on idle may be going to sleep. They had something on the 360 called HDD awake, which created a small file and deleted it on the HDD every few seconds. You can turn it off on the wiiu in its secret menu. On the PS3, you can turn off sleep, possibly, by using an app by the HDD manufacturer. It's probably on their website.
