PS2 Failing to update my PS2 Matrix modchip

Adding two photos, one of the modchip configuration menu, the other of the error I keep getting after running the update CD.
Is it possible the chip is fake?

I'd say your chip is a clone that can't be updated , the red line in your settings menu seems to not have the Matrix logo in the middle . I've only ever seen that on clones . If it is a clone you are lucky you can still access the settings menu after a failed update with original chip firmware. Check if it can still play backups on the originally installed firmware, if so leave well enough alone .
