[FAQ] Updating Sony consoles from USB (PS3/PS4/PS5/PSP/PSTV)

BTW: in the tutorial/faq I have used for PSTV below path (it works as I remember when I installing 3.60):
Code:
/PSVITA/UPDATE/PSVUPDAT.PUP
But in the internet, I also found another one (which I didn't test, but maybe it is also valid):
Code:
/PSP2/UPDATE/PSP2UPDAT.PUP

@aldostools Thanks. ^^
The reason why I didn't create parallel English version is that my English isn't better than automatic translators. :) So I leave it to the algorithms which are better and better from years to years.

@pinky I never successful pair PSTV with CMA, OCMA and QCMA with Windows and Linux. Also the title says updating from mass storage while cma tools are network agents linking PSV/PSTV between PC. I don't even see a reason why to use it in the first place on hacked console, always considering as piece of useless crapware. On unhacked PSV there is of course no choice but on PSTV You can use pendrive like normal people. :D

I've never tried it with the pstv, but I managed to do with the vita. you have to modify the xml, and updates go here. atreyu wrote a tutorial on it, which is on psx place. it's not really needed anymore, since you can downgrade:

About switching OFW and CFWs (I will add it one day to the guide):

From my observations, if OFW is below 3.55, then no CFW I know can be installed directly over it. The same with downgrading (with QA flag of course), none CFW can going lower than 3.55 just like that. For some reason OFW 3.55 (or any CFW 3.55) is the checkpoint here. And things getting even weirder if You in the past used 3.55 Rogero Downgrader or 3.55 Rebug 999 Downgrader. So:
  • If You want to install fw lower than 3.55, and You have already fw above 3.55, then install any 3.55 first.
  • If You want to install fw newer than 3.55, and You have version below 3.55, then install any 3.55 first.
Another contraption is that some CFWs cannot be installed over another, again, even with QA flag enabled. No matter if from so called recovery or XMB, no matter if from USB or HDD (debug updates). And of course I don't talking about situation when we have CEX IDPS and trying install DEX fw or vice versa. I'm talking about normal situation with CEX over CEX.

I.e I was unable to install 4.90 Evilnat CEX over OFW 3.55, I getting 8002F2C5, from both XMB and recovery. But I was able to install Rebug 4.84.2 Rex and after that, update to Evilnat was successful. Both: HDD and USB pendrive don't have bad blocks.

Any ideas why this happening? In theory we should be able to install any CEX fw on any CEX console, especially newer on older.

It is possible that something is missing in my CFW so it can't be installed on OFW/CFW 3.55, I will check it. Thank you very much mate

I am getting ready to do this with my PS3 on OFW 2.80. I spoke with NSC about year ago about this and this was his suggestion.

Evilnat, is there any other precautions one should take before going through the process of updating from OFW below 3.55?

Instead:
  1. Install CFW Rebug 3.55.4 over OFW equally or below 3.55.
  2. Install Rebug Toolbox (it is part of CFW every Rebug, look for packages list) and set QA Flag using this application (app showing You also current status of QA Flag: disabled/enabled, so no need to check it via eg. button combo).
  3. After that, normally, You should be able to install Evilnat CFW but You can't, for unknown to me reason (details in post no.7).
