FreeHDBoot doesn't load

I'm trying to use FreeHDBoot on my PS2, SCPH 39004. I've used this guide and the pre-configured RAW image. After the PS2 boot sequence, I get greeted with the FreeMCBoot screen, followed by a
black screen. When it finally gives an image, I'm in the file browser, and only my memory card (3rd party 64MB card) is visible. After backing out to the main menu, I only get the 2 default options, no uLaunchElf,...

I've also tried to image and guide from the most recent noobie package, but that was exactly the same. I also tried a USB drive with the FreeMCBoot installer on it, and RESCUE.elf in the root, but that just gave a black screen for 15 minutes until I shut it off.

I checked for a modchip, but the board is completely unmodified. I'm using a Game Star SATA adapter and a WD10EZEX hard drive. I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong.
 
First of all: I thoroughly DISAGREE with the Image-Method and I am the one who suggested it, before we could even boot from internal HDD!

@Fin9ersMcGee This is NOT meant to be used as a permanent solution, because it usually breaks the APA-Chain and causes issues later on!


@Kimirafer It is not "RESCUE.elf", but "RESCUE.ELF"... If you are on Windows, just change the extension to "el" and then "ELF".

If it starts wLE already, FORMAT the HDD, install FHDB via its installer and set up the rest via PFS Batchkit Manager and HDL Batch Installer and OPLM...

If it DOESN'T work as "RESCUE.ELF" (ALL CAPS), try this image and keep in mind to rename it (remove the ".zip" in the name)!

Any way to fix a broken FHDB? Used to work and now I just get black screen with the hard drive spinning up and down. I have to use my memory card to run FMCB. I have tried the installer program to reinstall/repair FHDB but to no success.

@TnA I managed to make it work. It didn't work immediately, but I noticed FMCBinstaller was .elf and not .ELF. Thanks for all the help, I probably wouldn't have figured this out on my own.
