From OFW 3.15 to 4.78.2 REX

Greetings.

I am getting my PS3 Fat out from it's long sleep. First of all i want to thank the Rebug team. I didn't update my PS3 for so long as i am sometimes taking it out to try compiling Gentoo stuff on OtherOS, hence why i am getting Rebug.

That aside, i want to know if it is "safe" to update to 4.78.2 REX directly from 3.15 OFW. I got to read a lot of contradictory stuff, stating you have to update to 3.15 to 3.55 OFW, then to 3.55 Rebug and finally to 4.xx Rebug. Some state you can go directly.

On the safe side, i think more flash = more risks, hence why i am asking.

Thank you!

Definitely good to ask first as there are probably not many consoles ever going from 3.15 OFW straight to Rebug 4.78. Joonie (Rebug Team Member) might be able to confirm here for you, but I personally think you should update to 3.55 OFW first to be safe.

But maybe you can keep your current Linux install if you don't do that so best to wait and see what the experts say.

Wow, that was some fast reply!

I am a perfectionist and i want to make it right the first time. Though it's not necessary for me to keep my actual Gentoo Linux as is. I'm currently in the process of backing it up as i ordered a brand new 1TB HDD, then i told myself, why not update for a CFW also and maybe be able to play some games or continue trying to study/reverse-engineer the RSX. Trying the new permanent LV1 patch to access the RSX and try to implement the kernel driver to new kernel is so trilling.

I should receive my new drive in about 2 days, so i have time.

Thank you very much for your answers. It's very appreciated.

You can go straight to 4.78.2.

But if you have linux already is good to go on 3.55 OFW then to 4.78.2.

Just wondering, going from 3.15 to 3.55 OFW.. that will wipe Linux and force a format yeah? or how does it handle removing Linux. do you just lose that HDD space instead?

When my colleague updated, it just left the partition there until he formatted manually. But the part of the partition and what's still in the VFlash, like Petitboot, will most likely be overwritten or unusable when coming back to an OtherOS enabled FW. That's my guess.

Not sure here, I think that vflash is resized to original, but HDD partition is probably untouched until manual format. It's because resizing encrypted UFS2 partition can damage data from GameOS. Resizing any common partition is risky, but uncommon and encrypted one is probably p.i.t.a.

Updating from 3.15 to 4.78 doesn't delete the oos partition until you format hdd on xmb however you won't be able to use your previous OOS, for 3.41 and above you need to install OOS++ from the scratch.
