PS3HEN Game conversion and installation

After reading many tutos here on how to convert JB folder to ISO and even PKG to ISO I could not find answers to these questions:

1. Even using webMAN / IRIS / ManaGunZ/ etc. to install PKG, I still not understanding if the PKG content is being installed into PS3 HDD or like a virtual ISO. So how it works and would be possible to use PKG without installing on PS3 HDD?

2. If I have the JB folder or ISO and a PKG DLC, would be possible to convert both on just one ISO? (and work of course)

3. Me and my brother share the games, I mean, when he comes here we play his backups and when I go there we play my backups so, if I play my game1 here and he plays my backup of game1 in his house, is that considered piracy?

4. I have a multi language backup USA format and would like to play it as PT-BR, how could I achieve this? I mean, is there any flag or modification I can do to force it? Or even add a custom one...

Thanks!

To convert retail games (disc or JB folders) to ISO you can use multiMAN or IRISMAN. They have a menu option to do that easily.

To convert PSN games to ISO use PSN Liberator or TrueAncestor Backup Retailer

If you bought the game, and you use a backup instead of the disc it cannot be considered piracy. But the laws varies in different countries.

To play games in PT-BR the game must support that language. Some games have the option to select the language in-game.
Others use the system language selected on XMB.

I don't think this is possible/practical, but if I missed something and it is, someone please correct me...

I could cleanup a lot of messy files and folders if it is possible to build game update files and DLC content into the ISO... As I have things now, it's much cleaner & easier than the JB folder days, so no complaints. :biggrin2:

DLC contents usually are linked to various title id of the same game (PSN/retail versions for multiple regions).
They usually need to be installed in hdd0/game.

The easiest way to include them in an ISO is to put them in PS3_EXTRA.
I recommend to include also the game updates in PS3_EXTRA just in case Sony decide to stop the support.

If the number of DLC or update packages is too larger, they can be merged and repacked into a single package (or a few ones).
It is very important to merge them in sequential order to avoid replace the newest files with old ones. Same requisite applies for installation of the PKG in PS3_EXTRA.

In a couple days, when my wife is sick of me sitting in front of a computer and merging pkgs together, then cramming them into isos and testing them... I'm telling her it's all your fault aldo... :chuncky:

Edit: @aldostools do you happen to have a link to a tutorial on this?

Another way to explain the problem is if we think how the games does the "gamedata" installation... you know, is an installation that happens the first time you boot the game in your PS3, is optional, some games doesnt uses it, others installs a couple of ridiculous files of some KB, and others installs several GB

This installation is made into dev_hdd0/game (like the DLC's), but the responsible of the installation is the EBOOT.BIN of the (running) game
The eboot probably contains an installer and a list of the files that are going to be installed... also it seems some games does an additional "decompression" because the files installed are different than the files in the disc

Well. the problem is if we add the DLC files to the ISO the installer inside the EBOOT is going to ignore them because are not in the list of files that needs to be installed :crybaby:

Incase we was able to modify that list (we cant as far i know), then we could force the copy of other files... but only to the same directory where is performed the "gamedata" installation

well I could not understand some limitations and behaviours yet... please try to explain again @sandungas and @aldostools

1. We have tools to edit EBOOT.bin as far as I know, which, from what I understood, tells how the game can must be installed or ran. So why is it so difficult to modify those instructions and merge everything? (or make a tool ^^)
ps.: systen was exploited, ps3tools created, many things... why the hell this can't be done?

2. Let's supose I want to play in a language that I know is inside the game but it's not the xmb's default and aldo the game does not support change the language... isn' possible to force it?

3. Can someone provide a tutorial on how to customize the game? language, sound, etc...

I think I can answer this one.

We do not have the source code for the eboot.bin, therefore we can only patch the existing file, we can not build a new eboot.bin from scratch.

This means we can not add stuff to it really, we can only change stuff that already exists in it. Therefore adding a list of extra files to install is not possible. We could probably change one file for another as long as we have room. To have room the file name and path need to be the same length or shorter, longer is not possible.

I am not sure if a situation like this exists, if there is no way to use a specific language it would normally not be included. For example this is why US games are smaller than EU games.

If for some reason a language is included but not accessible for some reason it MIGHT be possible to patch the eboot to swap the language with a supported one, like a redirect. Not sure on that.
3. Can someone provide a tutorial on how to customize the game? language, sound, etc...
That is not so easy as it will be different for every game as there is no standard system for that kind of thing.

Thanks @DeViL303 for the answer.

I got in more trouble with this game conversions...

1. Following what @aldostools said, I'm trying to use PSN Liberator to convert my PKGs to ISOs but I simply cannot get ACT.dat and IDPS.hex because of the following:
a - I made an idiot thing and hit some button on webMOD configuration screen on IDPS section and now my IDPS is 000... So it seems to be invalid I think.
b - If I try to copy the ACT.dat from webMOD html file manager, I can do the steps but it never gets copied to my USB. This behavior happens to copy any file or folder to external drives.
c - I got confused on how to get those files with HEN, I tried from ps3 Xploit dumpers but HAN Inititalize/ACT.dat Initialize or other dumper tools gets initialized. Does not matter if HEN is actived or not. (I'm using HFW 4.87)

2. I did not understand on how to use TrueAncestor... can somebody provide a recent tutorial?

3. After reading many things I saw that there are differences of JB/HAN/HEN backups and got even more confused. Let me clarify:
a - Whats is the difference between a PKG for HAN and HEN? What is needed to run any of them?
b - How to run PKG directly from external drive like ISOs? Or at least install on an external drive... (maybe FTP...)
c - Is there any tool on PS3 Tools Collection to convert PKG to ISO?

4. Long time ago I made a ISO backup of PS1 and PS3 games and now I don't know which game is for which platform, how to find it?
(For example, I have FFVII for PS1 and the PSN version for PS3... Both are ISO, how to know if its a PSN or PS1 game?)

The IDPS change is not permanent... delete /dev_hdd0/tmp/wm_config.bin and reboot. The original IDPS should be restored.

Use http://localhost/consoleid.ps3 to dump your idps, psid and act.dat

There is not any tool PS3 Tools Collection to convert PKG to ISO automatically. It has the tools to do it manually if you know how.

To run a PKG from external drive, extract the PKG to a folder like X:/GAMEI/NPUB12345
Use webMAN MOD to mount the game. The GAMEI option must be selected in /setup.ps3

Alternatively you can press SELECT+SQUARE and install the PKG

Noob question, is IDPS.hex created/changed when I activate the PS3?

Well, I started HEN, tried to open the URL but it leads me to google search :/
I also used the R2+O shortcut and it shows IDPS and PSID (is it normal it shows only 0s?), I need ACT.DAT. What am I doing wrong?

Just for curiosity, why not add that feature?

Didn't work for me, when triyng to use gameDATA is show error with (no usb). I'm using external HDD with NTFS. What´s wrong here?

1. Does the name needs to be complete? Example: complete -> UP9000-NPUJ94163_00-0000000000000001 / short -> NPUJ94163
2. Can I have any other character after the name? Example: /NPUJ94163 - Final Fantasy VII
3. Does this PKG must be signed?
4. Can I extract the updates/DLCs to overwrite game pkg? I mean, will that work in GAMEI option?

1. it needs to be the short version.
2. you can't add anything to it or the game won't be found I believe.
3. yes, you can use a license with a game on the external hdd.
4. I think dlc and updates work as well as I've installed them directly before, but I never tested them.

I found what was wrong here, I was using "Search" on browser instead Start... noob action XD I got the files :)

@aldostools
How can I convert PSN games to ISO using TrueAncestor Backup Retailer. I don't see any guides for this.

I suggest you that ask to the author or search in Youtube
I used to convert my games manually or create my own tools.

Many games can be converted without issues. However, there are some PSN games that have hardcoded paths in the EBOOT that point to /dev_hdd0. For these games it's required to patch the EBOOT or install game data with the resources accessed by these paths.

You can try extracting the game folder to /dev_usb000/GAMEI
Use webMAN MOD to mount it from /app_home/PS3_GAME

@aldostools
Sorry to bother you, but can you point me in the right direction on how to patch the eboot.bin of psn game that has paths hardcoded ?
Also, another question, does /dev_usb000/GAMEI run from fat32 drive only ?
