PS3 [GUIDE] SSD for PlayStation 3

I mean I know that it is not the capacity, otherwise a whole lot more people would complain about this issue. Also seems something that you can't really fix unless you have some sort of utility with which you can manually set the block size while formatting the drive for PS3. Or will the PS3 just use whatever block size you chose for the fat32 partition?

I just swapped in a older 500 GB laptop drive that hopefully does the trick.
Sector size it is not something which You can set by formatting drive. It set in factory and written in firmware or its config. This can be changed but needs special tools and hardware. You misleading sector size with cluster size. The last probably doesn't matter if it is not below or far above officially set for each of fs.

PS3 not using one partition, and FAT32 is only used on cache partition.

PS3 firmware always using 512 bytes sector size. 4K and e512 leading to problems. Probably we can considering those drives as incompatible.

Don't suppose anyone has any idea with older SSDs? I have some spare 1TB Samsung 840 Evos I no longer need in my PCs, but those drives before had multiple firmware updates in the past to fix bugs that resulted in slow speeds. By any chance has anyone else here ever tried a 840 Evo?

Hi. From my personal experience older ssd s wich have dram cache should work better.

I've literaly just yesterday received a new SSD in the post from Amazon. I bought a WD Blue 500GB for £44.99. Only this morning have I come across this thread. DOH!

I'm being recommended to replace the HDD in my PS3 by RIP-Felix. I never gave it another thought and went straight to buying a SSD rather than another HDD.

Has anyone got any performace results from the WD Blue?

@Rissy WD Blue can be CMR or SMR. Both techs offering different speeds and potential issues.

Can i ask, what is CMR and SMR please?

It's annoying I hadn't seen this post before buying an SSD. I've now bought 3 HDD from Amazon, all 500GB, all Seagate. Not sure of the differences, but i've bought:

1x ST500LT012 (this one has already arrived £21)
2x ST9500325AS (These wont arrive for another week or so - these i'm suspicious of as they were REALLY cheap £10.01 each!)

So i'll see how these go.

I had another look at my old PHat PS3 and actually it's only a 320GB HDD (Not sure of brand without taking it out), so i've never actually used a 500GB in a PS3 before.

Ah, I found this.

A bit technical, but if the point is to avoid SSDs for a PS3, then I'll move over to HDD again.

Any comments on my latest Amazon purchases above? You these will be ok?

I understood Your post that asking about HDD from WD from their line called Blue. SSD don't using CMR nor SMR because they are not magnetic media but flash. ;)

ST500LT012 using 512e:

ST9500325AS have 512 sector size:

Check S.M.A.R.T. maybe it is damaged if this is used HDD. Nothing strange in 2nd hand market. ;]

I've now installed the ST500LT012 I bought, and rebuilt the console on to this. So far it seems to be good. I'm not sure at what point I should see issues if it's not good. This is a HDD, not a SSD. I abandoned the use of the WD Blue SSD I bought due to reading this thread!

If none of issues mentioned in SSD guide appearing, high probably translation by fw (512e: from 4K to 512) is fine for PS3. But as I said
and which You constantly ignoring, check S.M.A.R.T. It will tell You in what condition is this HDD. ;)

It's ok, i definitely did not ignore you. I use a program called CrystalDiskInfo to do my HDD and SSD analysis. The HDD i'm using are brand new. only a few turn ONs on their counts. One yesterday, I was the first person to turn it on, so a count of 1!

Once i take the older HDDs out of the machines before a swap to new, I'll also analyse those too. I'm especially interested in my 14yr old + HDD from my Phat model!
