It's a shame, can you go back down from version to 4.86 to hack it with rebug lite? personally it is the best cfw I have installed because it allowed me to install any pkg
you can downgrade after enabling qa flag. use rebug toolbox or habib's app.

HI guys I'm happy to see people are still tinkering with the ps3 I stopped messing around with mine after sony patched me out of my yellow dog setup way back. Can I trouble you with 2 questions?
1- Starting from an unmodified 4.6 CHAxx roughly what is the process for installing linux?
2- Has any progress been made with improving performance under linux? We only had one core of the cpu and no gpu at all before.
Thanks!

1. You could use a patched CFW to create a OtherOS partition on the internal hdd so you can install Linux on it. The Rebug Toolbox gives you the tools you need to boot OtherOS.
There are threads in this forum with step by step instructions to install Red Ribbon. Of course it is a lot simpler to install on a USB disk, perf is bearable imho but of course if you are looking for speed, the internal hdd remains the best option.

2. There is only that old red ribbon Linux distro available at the end of the day. If you are a Linux enthusiast, you may be interested in the ongoing efforts to bring Linux T3 & full RSX support to the PS3. There is a dedicated thread on the topic with links to a series of long videos detailing the development process.
https://www.psx-place.com/threads/hardware-acceleration-for-rsx-gpu-in-otheros-ps3-linux.17681/
The dev makes files available so if you are not afraid to get your hands dirty, you can try to install a recent T3 test iso file..

The day the project above comes to full fruition, it will be a different story but for now, given the lack of available modern distros, I don't bother using Linux on PS3 except for research purposes.

Thanks bguerville. The link suggests work on unlocking the hardware is either stopped (2020) or very slow that's unfortunate. The focus on the rsx is a little surprising was more than one cpu core ever unlocked? I wonder how scientists were able to get such good performance out of linux ps3 clusters when the performance of a single ps3 is so poor.
This is a long shot but was anyone ever able to expand the ram? Games would never use it obviously but linux might.

In the ps3 arch there is one PPE (with only one PPU) & 8 SPUs dedicated to fast parallel calculations, a working SPU being able to perform 128 bit calculations at each of its step.
The SPUs are used for all sorts of things including hashing, encryption, game graphics calculation/data processing support to the RSX etc...
Only 7 of the 8 SPUs are mapped & working. The 8th SPU is always locked by default, enabling it at software level is possible but in practice it is not usable anyway so it's pointless.

However a linux kernel runs only on the PPE & there is little room for improvement there once you have delegated whatever costly calculations you could to SPUs or to the encdec engine.
What some computer science departments did was to leverage the calculation power of SPUs combined in arrays of cheap PS3s in order to obtain the parallel calculation power that they (and other departments such as physics, astrophysics, biology..) required for their research.
Performance wise, the PS3 arch had many advantages over its rivals & performed extremely well considering the constraints. Had S#ny persevered a ps5 may have used a ppu/spus at 7nm, 8Gb of RAM, full 64 bit memory addressing & an improved set of 64 bit ppc instructions, 512 bit SPUs for lightning fast parallel computing, a much improved RSX of course with at least 16Gb of dedicated GDDR6 VRAM. Lol.. That's what university guys expected S#ny to do on the long term btw, they thought they would be able to build upon their ps3 arrays with cheap ps4s etc.. It never happened.. to their dismay. They were not the only ones that were disappointed by the x86-64 move.

I don't recall anything done on the memory expansion front... Some worked recently on frankenstein CECHA with a 40nm RSX, a modchip is required but it appears to work fine. Great job from them actually..
There has been little hardware research overall in recent years compared to the potential for it but every now & again someone comes up with something new.
Syscon has seen some good research for the past couple of years...

Hi all,i have a fat ps3 cechg03,its on 4.82 firmware, according to youtube vids this can be jailbrocken,is this so?,thanks in advance.

its cool i have sorted it,now trying to find rebug 4.76 to download but all i get are dead links.
You can get old Rebug firmware here: https://archive.midnightchannel.net/SonyPS/Firmware/?cat=rebug. But why are you trying to install such an old version? Latest Rebug REX is 4.84.2, and latest Rebug Lite is 4.86.1. There is also Evilnat 4.88.2 CFW, which is able to have online access and should be the most convenient for most users: https://www.psx-place.com/threads/4-88-2-evilnat-cobra-8-3-custom-firmware-cfw-cex-released.32057/

P.S. You can also access rebug.me through wayback machine to get links (some will work, others won't) and md5sums for Rebug firmware.

Hi, i want to know how i put the han 4.87 in the hfw 4.88. its possible?
you can get HAN for 4.88 on **ps3xploit.com >Domain no Longer owned by team** (ps3xploit.me =new) website. i recommend looking into HEN instead. it includes HAN and much more, but of course you can use whatever you want. :)

cool, thanks.Another thing too :>, when I go to start han or any of its functions, it crashes. What can it be ?

well i installed evilnat ver 4.88,i cant seem to get rid or install another cfw as i cant toggle the qa flag in rebug toolbox, any idea how i can remove evilnat as i want to try other custom firmwars, cheers in advance.

Try habib's standalone QA flag toggler. Run it once once you install it, and you will see a black screen. Reboot (may not even be necessary, I can't remember) and then you should be able to install a lower version CFW.
