PS2 Hacking the PS2

Sorry about the multiple post, I clicked reply (like on this post) and now I can't get out of it until I finish my message and click post reply. Thank you for merging the post together. Am I supposed to edit just my original post and will it let others here on the forum know that I edited my post, so that they get a notification?

No problem at all, thats why Im here.

No, there is not a notification for editing, nor when adding of tags/mentions while editing neither...
There are exceptions, for instance, one-double-post doesnt hurt sometimes, if you think too much time has passed, or think maybe someone you needed to see your post simply hasnt yet, or you are trying to get different points of view across, etc...
But, please dont make it a habit as 6+ multiples in a row may actually be a record here. ;)
If you need to post like that again, all I ask is to send me a quick PM letting me know which thread, so I can clean it up for you. :)
OR, you can simply tag me like this:
@uniqueusername
(and it will alert me to the location needing my attention). ;)

Let me try to upload the rest of the files.

* It won't let me post additional pictures to this thread. It states, " The following error occurred. The uploaded file is too large."
Im not sure if that was a question or not, as the system in place has already told you the exact reason it wasnt working for you. ;)

I was trying to show the root directory of ULaunchElf and the drilldown of the folders because I'm missing a file in the mass:/ folder called "OPL.0.9.3.ELF", I found it online and transferred it there via USB to the PS2 Memory Card, but I got the same thing happening (not even sure if I'm supposed to do this step). Which is - I can see the game (testing it with only one game - and now that I'm thinking about it I'll try another game to make sure this variable is not the problem) in the USB and click it to run (I changed the file name using the program OPL Manager 21.1) and then a "Loading Config" statement pops up and the the screen starts to load. This is where it gets stuck and the the light on the USB shuts off. I was thinking it was the USB stick but it stays on on all the PS2's I have (until I run the game). I have reformatted it and tried the process over 10 times. I will be ordering a new USB stick (but I don't think this is the problem). I think the FreeMcBoot is missing some files (I could be totally wrong (hence why I'm trying to upload more pictures)).

There is no reason you should have to run any operation/test TEN-times with anything we are discussing, something is wrong so lets sort it out.

Let us stick to one model PS2 for now, and start with the specs below please for a base.

PS2 Model:
SCPH-39001

uLE WIP7:
http://www.psx-place.com/resources/ule-u-launch-elf-wip-7.367/download?version=426

OPL 0.9.3 (VMC):
http://www.psx-place.com/resources/opl-open-ps2-loader-0-9-3.372/download?version=432
NOTE: VMC = PS2 Virtual Memory Cards ... :D I know!! :D lol

FMCB 1.953 = FMCB installer v0.973 (FMCB v1.953 2016/12/16):
http://ichiba.geocities.jp/ysai187/PS2/FMCB/

Also, copy this CODE, and paste it to your PCs Notepad program:
Code:
192.168.0.10
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.1
Name it:
IPCONFIG.DAT
... save as "All Types" to ensure it does not save as a .TXT file while saving (you can check in PROPERTIES, with right-click afterwords if you feel unsure it was done correctly)...
... transfer it to your MemoryCards "SYS-CONF" folder, and grab the download from the link below...

RadHostClient 1.8a
http://www.psx-place.com/resources/...ule-host-compatible.629/download?version=1005

... the above will allow you to use a few different LAN transfer methods, including SimpleMediaSystem (SMS) to view your media/audio/picture collections from the PS2, while stored on PC... As well as (you guessed it ;)) RadHostClient (RHC), which will allow you to dragNdrop files from your desktop to the PS2 via " uLE > Filebrowser > HOST: ".

When the RHC window appears, input your PS2s IP in the top-box, which should be:
192.168.0.10
NOTE: Sometimes you have to go in and out of uLEs "HOST:" a few times before it connects and shows your files from RHC on PC... Hold the X-button if you get impatient and they will appear when ready.

The above links should fully get you up and running, since you already have access to the ability to make a fresh FMCB-Install on another memory card.
NOTE: DO NOT FORMAT YOUR ONLY FMCB MEMORY CARD EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure what you mean by the root-directory of uLE, as it does not have one (however, we can make a folder on the root of you memory card or USB device if you so desire one ;))...
Do you mean the ROOT of MASS (USB-ROOT)?..
Or do you mean the SYS-CONF folder on MemoryCard0, where uLE stores its config file?

You can find your missing OPL 0.9.3.ELF file in the link to resource-downloads I provided.
All the downloads in that link are straight-forward, and tested-working-properly, and should work for you right out of the box.
I uploaded them myself, and they all work in all of my PS2s.
Virus-Free also, unlike many other sites.

You keep mentioning OPL-manager, but that seems to be what is confusing you...
Can you please just tell me exactly what it is you are trying to do (so I can give you the correct advice you require to accomplish it)?

If you are trying to play PS2-games through OPL (some may need compatibility modes set), please tell me which GAME, as you have not told me this much needed information. ;) lol
For all I know you could be talking about homebrew games, or emulator games, etc...
Be specific, and you wont be disappointed, for sure.

Don't get me wrong this isn't the method I want to use but when something doesn't work I want to learn. Inevitably, I will be using the HDD model because of the size of the HDD and the loading time.

That is probably why most of us are here...
You will do well here.

IHD is definitely the way to go! :D

I believe the USB on the PS2 is a 1.1 - I'm wondering if anyone has figured to upgrade this to USB 3.0, but I'm sure there is a motherboard compatibility issue. Thank you again guys. I'm sorry about all the problems I'm having with this. I'll check online for more help.

There will not be any 3.0-upgrade for the PS2, sorry.
Transfers should be done via RJ-45 Ethernet/SMB/LAN Cable for the best speeds possible.

You are online getting help already lololol, dont panic ;) :-p...
As far as members on Staff, I am THE-PS2-PERSON here (with more than a dozen years of PS2-homebrew/modding experience), and Im here to help...
However, there are several others (with superior knowledge) in our community, whom I can tag for you, if you want to see if I can locate someone with specific OPL-manager knowledge, however that program is NOT actually necessary to do ANYTHING on a PS2.
I will even make you some files if I have to, to get this working for you, please be patient, as sometimes too much input from multiple sources causes conflicting issues.

Again, I invite you to visit the link below for PS2-NOOBS, as it has OPL-compatibility-list-LINKS, and several-dozen other awesome/hard-to-find goodies:
....... PS2 NOOBS .......
The Table-Of-Contents is in the first post. :D

For now (until I hear back from you and you hear back from me again), please take a look at these varied config-files for FMCB and uLE, which should give you a better idea of what your PS2 is seeing (for a few different styles/setups), as it will give you a very good idea of how the PATHS themselves are actually set up. :D

Howdy.

Shot in the dark here, but... I'm having a spot of bother getting FMCB onto this new-to-me SCPH-50001/N. I have thee Action Replay Max Evo, and a 128MB SanDisk Cruzer Mini. It sees all the files (tried both 1.95 and 1.953 Noobie Pack) but it just goes to a black screen. Even with the FCEUltra.elf workaround. Also of course tried every flash stick I had as well, of course FAT/FAT32, but only two show anything at all. Neither actually launch any of this. Others report this exact old SanDisk USB flash drive works...

I have the official network adapter in (modified with the ABitTop.com SATA upgrade kit; other buyers said it's good/working)... could that maybe be interfering or something? Only, we're supposed to be able to get FHDB to install FMCB and vice versa, so I'm erring on no. Mainly trying FMCB first to be sure the motherboard fuses aren't blown out etc. for this before I put some real money down for the HDD.

As far as I know, this thing isn't mod chipped (warranty sticker intact). I know that can conflict spectacularly...

So, I am planning on the IHDD method, and perhaps SMB (if only mainly to load the games with)... I'm really looking forward to it. But I may need some further help there; sincere apologies in advance for my ignorance, completely new to Homebrew but go way back to PS1. I'm ace at computers though, I should pick this up fairly quick.

Hi, I set up my ps2 with FHDB a year or so ago, and just recently modded the network adaptor with the same AbitTop SATA adaptor: https://i.imgur.com/tXD9wx9.jpg

I'm afraid I cant offer any help with actually creating a FMCB card using action replay as I got a friend to create one for me and used that to set up FHDB :( Hopefully someone else can assist with those initial steps. I'm in Australia so shipping would likely cost more than just buying a ready-made FMCB card from ebay.

If the Action replay enables you to run an elf file then I guess perhaps try running the latest FMCB installer from http://ichiba.geocities.jp/ysai187/PS2/FMCB/index.htm from a FAT32 usb drive, or launching ulaunchelf/wlaunchelf then using that to run the FMCB installer from USB. I'm guessing that's where you're getting the black screen though.

You can use FMCB with the network adaptor installed. Even if you have a HDD with FHDB installed on it, if you power on with a FMCB card inserted it loads from that. I've installed FHDB from FMCB and created a FMCB card from FHDB.

Once you have the system booted with a FMCB card I hopefully should be able to answer questions about then setting up FHDB/OPL and using HDLGameInstaller to copy games over from PC to internal HDD etc.

Thank you, I would really appreciate it. I have ordered a 1.953 genuine card, should be in on Monday.

Yep, endless black screen after attempting to play the installer in the media player. I am hoping the incompatibility is limited to ARMax (notoriously USB drive picky) and not the Homebrew drivers or I'm in trouble. I have two red cards I'd want to use for update/backup purposes for this, so also hope this card coming isn't somehow going to interfere with creating new cards (heard that's going on).

You know though, I recall somebody else on YouTube having this problem on a 50001/N... they then tried a 30001 and it worked, so probably this ARMax method just doesn't work on these models for some reason.

Unfortunately, I do think it's going to be the partitioning and folder/file hierarchy I'll grapple most with in the learning curve initially. Seems the least documented of all of this.

AR Max can be picky when it comes to flash drives, and the only elf files i could ever get it to run was Pgen, FCEUltra & SwapMagic. The workaround you talk of was for FMCB 1.8 and might not work with the new installer. You could try installing the old version then upgrade. Another idea is to use FCEUltra to run uLaunch then use uLaunch to run the latest installer. Or try using SwapMagic to run the installer.

If the problem is your flash drive, and you have the media creation software, you can make a special CD that will load SwapMagic.

Another option: if you have a retail PS1 game. You could try the Independence exploit.

Couldn't see an edit button.

When I said FMCB1.8, I ment 1.8b. Not 1.8c.

Sure enough, the issue was with ARMax. I have managed to get two more cards off of the eBay card (one multi, one cross-model). One of my red cards flat out would not take any installation type of FMCB so think it's close to EOL (it's legit unless WalMart was selling bootlegs back in the day. =/). So for other novices, get spare cards if you want to make your own for backup/update off a pre-made/bought card, they all won't work.

I'm currently debating which HDD I want to roll the dice with. I'm decided on a 1TB @ 5400 and WD brand, but undecided on 2.5 or 3.5 form factor. What do you reckon? In 20 years of computing, I have only ever had 2.5 drives fail on me (3 of them)... but they're easier on aging capacitors and fuses for less power draw. I'd appreciate your $0.02 on this aspect.

I went with a 1.5TB 2.5", shucked from a usb drive (cheaper than buying the drive alone). Really just for the power/heat/noise reasons.
It's ridiculous how much quieter the system is compared to the old 320GB 3.5" Maxtor PATA drive that I had in there before.

See what other's with more experience advise though :)

Could be a fake, I brought one from Blockbusters that turned out to be fake! Worked well with FMCB but died prematurely. I took it apart to find a black blob where the controler chip should be. It also had made in China on it. All the others say made in Japan. Some of Datel's (the makers of AR Max) memory cards work well with FMCB. I have a 16Mb one that still works. Have you tried reformatting the card before doing an install?

It was bad luck, think in how many laptps are sold dailly with 2.5" hdds and works normally :)
I dont have any experience with hdd's in PS2 but i suggest 2,5" because can be conneced to the power supply of the PS2
And for the brands, i suggest to take a look at the hdd's used by sony in the PS3 and PS4, uses to be very good with low power, low noise, low heat, etc...
Like the hitachi travelstar series, or toshiba MK series... are hdd's intended for laptops
Here you can see some of the hdd's that came shipped from factory with the PS3

Phew, sorry for the MIA guys I got pretty sick for a bit there and then waited fruitlessly for Amazon to get a WD10SPZX in stock... didn't happen... had to ultimately go with a WD10EZEX. So I have installed it and have formatted it with uLE (looks good). Actually kind of glad the 2.5" didn't work out, this 3.5" has a bit of play in it as it is.

So... is it HDL Dump Helper GUI we're using these days on the PC-end?

And, how would I go about transferring the ISO's from my PC to this IHDD using the network? I know that's much slower, but I'd rather not have to keep pulling the drive to do this. Any tips on setting that bit up would be greatly appreciated (I am also considering setting up a static NAT instead of DHCP so it won't swap out and knock this off). Admittedly, networking isn't my strongest tech skill set. As its likely relevant, I'm on a router behind a router, my IP table is 10.0.0.X (not 192.168.1.X). And I will have to use the router between the PC and PS2 (only have one RJ45 on my motherboard).

I'm also interested in OPL Manager.

Also, I am on Windows 10... hopefully that won't prove an obstacle.

To avoid a clash when using DHCP and a static IP address, you are supposed to reserve the IP address on the router/switch's side.

You can use HDLDump. But there also exists HDLGameInstaller. HDLGameInstaller now supports DHCP. It also has some various issues at the moment, which I am still trying to (but really slowly) fix. As long as you use Windows, you are good to go.

Well... I've tried the adapter's ethernet on both of my two routers (one MAC address filtered - the 10.0.0.1, the other not - the 192.168.1.1), several different (known working) ethernet cables and nothing. But the HDD works, spins up, formatted and all. I don't understand. Is there a special setting I need to apply somewhere for ethernet to work (to even be seen by a router), perhaps?

I even tried going back into uLE, load the HDD module, to see if that might kick it in but it didn't.

When I swapped the IDE board out and popped the Molex over, I handled it like spun glass... I'm sure I didn't break anything. And the rub is, the yellow sticker was still covering the network port, it had never been used...

I really, really, really don't want to have to pull the HDD every time I need to add/change contents. :(

Edit: Sorry, figured out how to enable Eth in OPL and I see it now. Really odd, never seen a network device behave like that before lol.

Steep learning curve on getting the software-end squared away. If anyone could maybe link to good, current tutorials on that I'd appreciate it (and not post so much. Seems difficult to find current stuff that goes a bit more in-depth than what I've run across so far).

It's been long time since i used online ps2 stuff, but for me it looks like you want to use ftp server. Right? Not sure that is still valid in 2018, but you should go to "MISC:/PS2Net " in ule to launch ftp. Otherwise ule won't load net modules.

Hold on. What exactly do you want to do? Do you want to use FTP, for copying some files to the PS2? Or do you want to install games from over the network?

If it is the latter, you need to use the respective PS2-side installer. HDLGameInstaller is the PS2-side installer itself, meant to be used with its PC companion: HDLGManClient.

HDLDump actually has two parts: the server and the PC client. Both of which are (unfortunately) of the same name. HDLDump's PC client is command line-based, but there exists some GUI frontends like HDLDumb and the one you found.

Either way, installing games on the PS2 does not involve FTP.

Some apps seem to default to 192.168.0.10 or use what is set in hdd0:/__sysconf/FMCB/IPCONFIG.DAT (Text file, open in notepad++), some will use DHCP.

I reserved 192.168.0.10 in DHCP on my router, that way if a given app is using DHCP or a static IP it will be fine.

Adding games:
-Download the latest version of hdlgameinstaller from http://www.psx-place.com/threads/hdlgameinstaller.3709/
-Extract the 7zip file, you'll get a PC and PS2 folder
-Copy the PS2 folder to a FAT32 formatted thumb drive (should run OK from internal HDD also)
-On PS2, open uLE, browse to MASS then into the folder you copied, and run HDLGameinstaller.elf
-The app will start up and should obtain an IP from DHCP, it will show the IP on screen
-On your PC, run the HDLGManClient.exe from the PC folder you extracted earlier
-Enter the IP, connect

You can then install new games (ISO format, CD based games in bin/cue format need to be converted with OPLManager or WinBin2Iso)

For copying OPL art or other small files I normally use the 'HOST' option in uLE along with radhostclient on PC - http://www.psx-place.com/resources/rad-host-client-1-8a-sms-ule-host-compatible.629/

You open uLE on pS2, launch the radhostclient app on PC and enter you ps2's IP, then drag files/folders onto the radhostclient window.
Then in uLE browse into 'HOST" and you should see the files you added on PC. If not quit out of and go back into the 'HOST' section in uLE a few times.

Alternatively you can use FTP if you enable it in uLE as kozarovv mentioned :)

There is no standard for this. The most "universal" one will be in mc:/SYS-CONF/IPCONFIG.DAT. There is no equivalent for the HDD unit.

For my newer software releases, my approach is to have application-specific settings, as with OPL. The IPCONFIG.DAT file has no standardized way for indicating more settings like the link operation mode and whether DHCP is to be used. But for backward-compatibility and the user's convenience, IPCONFIG.DAT from the memory card is loaded if the settings are missing.

As of recently, LaunchELF will still use mc:/SYS-CONF/IPCONFIG.DAT. If you load it from somewhere other than the memory card, then it'll try to save to IPCONFIG.DAT at its location. Otherwise, it will no longer check the HDD unit for the IPCONFIG.DAT file.

You can then install new games (ISO format, CD based games in bin/cue format need to be converted with OPLManager or WinBin2Iso)

The user can also mount the disc image with some tool like Daemon Tools. If the tool does not correctly access the disc image on its own, mounting the disc image is a workaround.

Yes, I hopefully intend to install the games via Network (don't want to handle the HDD too much, last thing I want to do is blow a fuse). I actually don't have a USB > SATA available either, I'd have to keep popping it into the desktop and that's a hassle lol.

So I'm seeing that both FHDB and HDL Game Installer are geared for HDDOSB (Browser v2.00) and I don't have it. I would actually like to, but I don't think that'll work on a 1TB SATA anyway (at least not while also utilizing the full 1TB, as I understand it). Or am I mistaken? That's actually why I was looking at HDL Dump Helper GUI (everyone on youtube's demonstrating how-to's with that one also, bit easier to grasp with that), and also haven't installed FHDB yet (I was planning to, even if mostly as just a redundancy)... seen the same thing about that. Don't have a set preference here, I just don't want to install the wrong things and mess something up.

Alright, so for the HDD itself I don't have to do anything else to it after it's formatted (which it is, uLE), or do I need to expand that or make more partitions or anything like that? (VMC's, OPLM art etc?) Does the Homebrew software manage this and folders themselves? Just want to be sure there's nothing else I have to do to it before I start attempting to get games in there and make those things more complex later. This is the portion that's not very documented. I do plan on using VMC's mostly, so if I do have to manually partition for that... what would be the procedure and recommended size to use for a 1TB drive assuming an 8MB 'card' or two per game?

Another thing about the Networking... I do have to change the PS2 IP Subnet to 10.0.0.X because that is what my router and devices use, I don't think any of this will work if it's on 192.168.0.10. While I can see it on the router as-is, it's an amber light and I think this is why in part. Also that SMB 1.0 is disabled on Windows these days (WannaCry ransomware, etc. Which I'm actually pretty concerned about now... seems OPL and everything else requires that and port 445, one of the two this crap targets. The PC I had wanted to use for this is actually on the internet... should I be worried about enabling SMB 1.0 on it, even with the supposed patches?). Otherwise, I have DHCP reserved 10.0.0.2 for the PS2 and 10.0.0.3 for the PC on my router now.

Ah yes, I ran across the uLE > Configure > Network Settings for mc0:/SYS-CONF/IPCONFIG.DAT Is that the only one I need to alter for the rest to use what's set (I can't change the IP in OPL network settings)? And that's supposed to be on the FMCB card, right? And MC0 is port 1... I'm using FMCB in port 2; will that matter when I switch it back to port 2?

Again, sorry for my ignorance and thank you for your patience and help with all of this. You guys rock!

Games installed with HDLGameInstaller will also work with OPL (without HDDOSD).

BTW currently OPL creates all needed folders on HDD and MC automatically after first run.
