HardDisk data Recovery from an Dead PS3

if you had CFW and saved the eid root key before the ps3 died, then yes you can recover data.

Without the key, your encrypted disk is gone for good.

Do you know if this key is in NAND or SYSCON?
I'm asking it, because the Cell is dead, so if the Key isn't in Nand or Syscon, i will try a kit switch.

iirc, the erk key is in the metldr (think it's near the beginning if not the very beginning of it).

It is. But... encrypted (...)

(...) by Cell Key. :D

To be honest, we don't know by what meta loader (metldr) is encrypted. ERK (EID Root Key) is first 48 bytes of this file. But outside PS3, no one yet decrypt it, so no one retrieved ERK without working PS3. Maybe it is encrypted by some info from SysCon? Who knows.
@zecoxao

You have missed the train. Obtaining this key on CFW is few seconds of effort (on HEN not yet possible).

And if You are curious how (because You cannot read contents just like that), here is my tutorial (and links for homepage of HDD Reader):
