PS3 Help/advice needed for fixing PS3 - think is overheating

Hello,

I have an 80GB PS3 I got new for Christmas 2008 (maybe 2007). A few weeks ago the game I was playing froze, so I held down the power button until it beeped and the system turned off. I didn't turn it back on after that because it was late so I figured it was time to stop for the day.

The next time I used after 20 - 30 minutes the system automatically turned off in the middle of a game. It beeped a few times and the red power light at the front was flashing. I googled it and it sounded like an overheat which made sense given its age, so I took it to a repair shop to have it cleaned and the thermal paste replaced.

However after this was done the same thing happened - after 30 or so minutes it automatically shut off and the red light was flashing on the front. I contacted the guy that fixed it and he said next steps would be to try reflow / reheat the CPU. I was nervous to try this as he said it was a bit risky and that lead me down the google rabbit hole which brought me here.

Some more information:
  • The system powers on without issue - both crashes happened after around half an hour of playtime
  • After the second crash the system did not feel particularly warm
  • I have not seen the power light on the front turn yellow - only green and red
  • When I turned the system back on after the second crash it gave me the generic "system was not shut down correctly" message, did some kind of check and restarted. No other error messages and no error codes were given.
  • Model is a phat CECHK01
Does anyone have any advice for what I should do next? From what I've read it seems like people disagree on if reheating the CPU actually fixes things, but most of those comments where on YLOD discussions, which I'm not sure is the case here. Hard drive and PSU failures, and the NEC tokins also came up quite a bit but again most discussions were for the YLOD and I haven't noticed the front lights turn yellow.

I'm not super good at technical stuff but if there's any other information needed I'll try my best to provide it.

Thank you very much.
