PS3 Help with a found PS3 Phat

Hello, new user. I found an abandoned PS3 phat. It didnt have a hdd so I put one in and when powered on i get this.
"The system software cannot be run correctly.

If the system cannot be restarted, you must reinstall the system software. Connect storage media that contains update version 2.45 or later, and then press the start and select buttons at the same time."
I put 4.80 official firmware on a USB and formatted it MBR and with an 8 gig partition I've been at this all day and I keep getting the "Update Data cannot be found"
Please help
 
Maybe your USB stick is not compatible. Try another one, newer drives tend to fail more than olders.

Also, check that the folder structure and filename are correct: PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

Another possibility could be that your console is on DEX mode, so you will need to use a debug update PUP.
 
You cannot update from such old version to newest. For unknown to me reason.

Do this:
  1. update to OFW 3.55 or CFW 3.55 (i.e Rebug 3.55.4)
  2. update to CFW Rebug 4.84.2 Rex or 4.86.1 Lite
  3. update to CFW Evilnat (latest)
For some reason, Evilnat cannot be installed from 3.55, that's why such checkpoint in form of Rebug CFW.

And do not install OFW past 3.55. It is pointless and will make your life harder because after 3.55 version, CFW cannot be installed over OFW from USB, without webexploitation.
