PS3 Help with PS3 CECHE - PS2 BC doesn't work

Hello, guys.

I have a ps3 CECHE and I just doesn't know what else I can try.

On OFW, it recognizes PS2 discs but it tends to stay in a black screen (but I can acess the menu and exit to XMB). When it does load the game (after many resets), it will freeze after 1 or 2 minutes and I have to hard reboot.

Well, today I JBed the PS3 again. Again, it does recognize ps2 discs but the game doesn't boot at all. It stays in a black screen and I can most of the time acess the menu to exit to XMB.

Today I installed EvilNat 4.91 Rebug 4.82 and 4.84 Rex, even tried tinkering with Rebug Toolbox (for Rebug CFW) and nothing worked.

I've already changed the HDD, tried with SSD (even though I've read that it doesn't mesh well with ps2 games) and nothing changed as well. Tried to mount isos with webman, nothing.

I don't know if there's something wrong with the GS component.

Can anyone help me? Is there a way to know for sure that it's something with GS?

Thanks in advance!

So you're saying no difference in behavior when loading ps2 dvd vs original disc.

sounds like an issue with GS chip. You can try forcing "ps2_netemu" via webMAN MOD IIRC. See if that loads PS2. This won't work with optical disc though. I think @RIP-Felix knows about this issue.

If I force netemu, the game will run but I can't use the virtual memory card.

Is it possible to exchange the GS chip?

Just for information:

It does indeed play ps2 games in netemu, however, after some time the ps3 turn off with 3 short bips and blinking lights.

It's not overheating since Webman shows cpu in 66 C and rsx in 62 C. I played Ridge Racer Unbounded and it does not turn off even after 20 min of gaming.

This ps3 in particular has already been delidded and has tantalus capacitors.

If anyone need more information, just let me know.

Thanks in advance!

So yes, this is what I've been calling a noPS2_Menu category. So far there are many potential causes but most of the time it's been the GPU (RSX). We come across it every now and then replacing the GPU and when that happens another GPu tends to fix it. Although I just tried that on my noPS2_Menu console and it didnt work.

EEGS or GS is possable as are resistor banks between the I/O lines for RSX and EEGS/GS. There are many other potential causes and it's still a big mystery if there's any particular component that's "most" likely to cause it.

It is not related to the frankenstein mod we've concluded, since it can and does occur on unmodified 90nm models.

As for anyone fixing them. Not really. You could try replacing the RSX and hope for the best, but it's a crapshoot.

when it shut's down what error code does it display? can use ps3toolset.com system managment tab to find out, or ps3 advanced toolset to dump...etc. Evilnat even has a dump errorlog option built into new FW. Lot's of options if the console boots.

Speaking of evilnat, he said there was a bug that can cause this behavior. But if you update to the latest Evilnat CFW, or were on rebug that shouldnt be the cause.

Yes you can just assign another VME IIRC, if that doesn't work then try installing a PS2Classics Launcher then try assigning again.

It could very well be a compatibility issue or could be related to RSX

I think @RIP-Felix has covered quite a lot. Please follow along.

Well I have one I'm working on and @DeadEnd has one too. Other's have tried tracking this ninja gremlin down before too, with limited sucess. For now, try all the software related stuff you can think of, I'm not very knowlegable about that side of it.

Hi, guys. Thanks for all the replies so far.

So, it doesn't show any errors in the exact time and day of the shutdown. For example, when I use ps3toolset there are 32 errors and the most recent occured in Jan 12 2006 (1002).

Btw, this a ps3 with 11d of uptime, so it's super frustrating that this is happening.

When I play ps1 games, it runs perfectly. Same with ps3 games. Like I said before, ps2 games in HW mode doesn't run at all and in SW mode it turns off the ps3 in a minute or two.

I tried to see the log using EvilNat dump, but there's nothing too.

Thanks again!

I know it's unbelievable, but I had a similar error when not using an official DualShock controller on my CECHC04. Is your controller a clone?
